Guest Col city fan Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 I'm struggling to think of a worse manager tactically. Last night those players didn't know what to do and for Woy to make Wooney his talisman...well.... But we've had some stinkers to be fair. Turnip Taylor, the Wally, Capello even. All as bad as each other. Again though, it's much more than just the manager. The FA are rotten to the core.
Nod.E Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Yes. Said it from day 1. Was furious at his selection, dispondant with his formation and round pegs in square holes will never win a tournament. Spain?
MrSpaM Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 How could you be in charge of a team for this long and still not know what your best starting 11 or formation is?!?
filbertway Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 An actual owl picking up random scraps of papers with players names on could have got us through that qualifying campaign. Still, I think it has to go to McClaren for actually failing to qualify.
Leicesterpool Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 To be honest if McClaren was in charge last night would he even he had ****ed up to?
foxes_rule1978 Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 To be honest if McClaren was in charge last night would he even he had ****ed up to? McClaren was poor, but Hodgson just made too many basic errors, Kane on set pieces is possible brain dead...
Dames Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Hodgson is the worst in the past 30 years at least. He was so stubborn and arrogant it completely hindered any progress. It was like he was hoping it would all click and he would be hailed as a genius. I personally believe that he wasn't as tactically inept as people make out but more rather the above point where he wanted his idea and formation to work out and was just too stubborn to change it. The past 4 years have been a slog watching England. I'm glad he's gone.
StanSP Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 that old quote about insanity comes to mind watching this 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but still expecting different results'
Donut Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 that old quote about insanity comes to mind watching this 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but still expecting different results' We didnt do the same thing over and over It was the opposite that undid him Namely ****ing around with the players and style of play to the point he had no idea who to pick, or in what position. Throwing on every available striker in the hope something might happen while Rooney collects balls off the back 4 like a regista Abysmal
StanSP Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 We didnt do the same thing over and over I meant having Kane on set-pieces.
johnny the fox Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 when hodgson said yesterday "I don't know what i'm doing here" at the press conference .. he summed it up for the whole fookin country... imagine if we had done well you wouldn't of got him off the fookin telly.. he was just yet another FA yes man..we never learn..
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 normally be arsed with true geordie vids but he's pretty much summed up a nation's feelings in 7 minutes there
Ricey Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 In the end he was one of the worst, on the basis that he just didn't learn from his or his predecessors mistakes. Cramming the 'best' players into unfavored positions, picking unfit players, ignoring players from outside the big clubs etc etc. I also don't think he did enough to relieve the tension and pressure that goes with England at a major tournament. Add in his increasing stubbornness towards everything and his total lack of tactical ability and it was a recipe for disaster. We have a lot of average and tactically illiterate (thick) players. These players however perform much better for their clubs. Why? I don't think we can use the tiredness card this time around, some of these players have had plenty of rests during the season. Instead I think they have much better managers back at their clubs who play them in their best roles and know how to get the best out of them. Hodgson on the other hand didn't seem to any sort of clear tactical plan and just hoped by having the 'best' players on the pitch that would be enough, he even admitted that with his crazy "systems don't win matches, players do" quote. Nice man, bad manager.
