Just watching replay of the Farah race from last night and commentator declared Farah to be Britains greatest ever athlete and the went further and declared him Britain greatest ever sportsman. I think that might be going a bit far, and I guess as a former runner Brendan Foster might be slightly biased. But the subject on a whole is subjective and Farah I'd certainly up there.

So I thought I'd created a poll and see who we all thought deserved that title. And obviously suggest anyone I might have missed. I've tried to cover a number of sports.

EDIT: More choices added.

I can't see an option to vote for Phil 'The Power' Taylor? :D

I could only do 20 lol

I was about to add him and Lewis Hamilton when I ran out lol

Judging by your nominees you need to put a date on it e.g since 196x

Well that's why I asked people to offer up anyone I missed, I'm only 33. So you know you could make a suggestion like I suggested lol

I did try and think back to older ones, but I couldn't really think of any. I could have put Mary Peters, but against that list, not really. Could have had Jackie Stewart, but then I've not put Hamilton on, so no. Could have had Roger Bannister, but again I don't think he measures up.

I think it's impossible anyway but to cover the whole history of sport is definitely impossible so I wasn't suggesting you included people further back in time I was just being pedantic about the description and thought by putting a date on it would prevent people going further back.

No problem really.

I think people have their own preferences. Sports they prefer will mean they hold people from those sports in higher regard.

And I thought it was an interesting question as we seem to be in a golden era of sport atm.

There's too many sports to pin down a "greatest ever".

You should do a category of each sport if anything.

Botham, Fred Perry, George Best, Bobby Moore, Kenny Dalglish (who you've missed out), McCoy, Taylor, Jackie Stewart are all in the top bracket but then I guess the list could go on.

It cannot be considered a proper poll for the greatest ever British sportsperson if there isn't a place for Kenny Dalglish lol

I said make suggestions, somebody is bound to get missed!

Not a dig mate.

Dalglish was suggested in another post.  I don't even think King Kenny's own family would vote for him in a Greatest ever British sportsperson poll.

Where do you stop?  Shall we have Archie Gemmill cus he scored that goal against Holland?

All things considered, Chris Froome's achievements are greater than the rest. But he would never be as highly regarded as the likes of Bradley Wiggins because he does t have much of a personality.

No Tom Daley!

Seriously, for the amount of airtime he gets, you'd think he was a world-striding colossus and not the perrenial bottler that he is.

I suggest Dalglish because if it was a football category then he'd be in there easily as he was a proper complete forward.

Even George Best said in an interview that he admired Di Stefano because he was complete and the closest complete forward since him was Dalglish.

Are you in love with Liverpool ? Seriously get over yourself. Zidiane called Paul scholes the greatest midfielder of his time. Why don't scholes get put in the poll ?

Lineker could be more worthy , seeing as he scored the most goals at a World Cup finals.

This is the greatest sportsman, not greatest footballer. Like I said, you can't pin a great so would have to do it per category hence I named a few footballers. Yes Scholes, yes Lineker, yes Charlton (who I missed out, as an example).

Chill out. You always seem so angry.

This is a great poll. Can this not be a national poll?

The results would be very interesting.

Mo has to be up there- hes in a league of his own.

But some truly greats sports people there.

Max Woosnam was a brilliant all-around sportsman and should always be in the conversation whenever this debate comes up.

I actual learned about Woosnam from a thread on here a few years ago.

Gold medal tennis player, captain of England's national football team, accomplished cricketer, great snooker player, and perhaps most noteworthy of all, he once beat Charlie Chaplin in table tennis playing with a butter knife. lol
