erlee Posted 17 September 2016 Posted 17 September 2016 Not sure why Amartey looks so gungho when playing for Copenhagen and seem so timid when playing EPL.. he always look to offload sideways & as quickly as possible. I think he has attacking capabilities but his confidence appears low - that's how i saw it last season & this season - looks much the same. Mendy - haven;t see enough of him yet.
Foxxed Posted 17 September 2016 Posted 17 September 2016 We'll need all of them. Two haven't had enough time to really settle in, and one is decent but an attacking midfielder, which may not be what we need every match.

I'm certain Steve Walsh agrees too, considering bringing him in was his first move at Everton, and it's already proving to be a successful one. Maybe we were looking players that are better on the ball.So although you don't win the ball back as much as with a Kante or to a much lesser extent Gueye when you do there is more of a attacking outlet
lgfualol Posted 17 September 2016 Posted 17 September 2016 Doesnt gueye play in a three though. There would have been an absolute meltdown if we signed him as a Kante replacement.

Think Amartey has been told to keep it simple and will start driving forward more as he grows into his role.

He had more time and Space in Denmark.. He is just finding his feet, in his 1st full season as major contender and competition for 1st choice. Hes had his moments in both defensive and attacking movements..Like his betters he was poor against Liverpool..So what!! Since last season hes shown steady progress, Ranieri has given him his spurs, Lets enjoy watching his potential grow, like all in the team he will have good and bad days.. So we shouldnt get on his back, the team and fans job now is to encourage hes learning. Mendy..simply too early, he needs a good 8-10 games behind him before any type of credits or debits are put towards him...

Just saying that based on current evidence, he has a lot to learn. Not saying he can't do it but it'll take him quite some time. And an aggressive ball winner he will never be. He won't slot in seamlessly and personally, I wouldn't have signed him. £13 million is a lot of money to spend on someone like that. Seems like a Ranieri signing to me. Idrissa Gueye would've been a much better fit. I'm certain Steve Walsh agrees too, considering bringing him in was his first move at Everton, and it's already proving to be a successful one. Pretty sure scouts don't base judgements on 55 minutes and a couple of friendlies. Perhaps I should point you back to your original post of "King over Mendy any day". Seems like your mind is made up and you aren't actually willing to give him or the manager time to adjust.
Guest Col city fan Posted 17 September 2016 Posted 17 September 2016 I don't really have any concerns about any of the midfielders when playing at home against sides where we'll have the bulk of possession. Take this afternoon. King, Amartey or Mendy could all come in and I think we'd win. It's in the tougher games against sides who pass through the middle, quickly and effortlessly that I think we'll suffer because I don't think any of the three will cope particularly well with this. I'm really surprised Ranieri went with a 442 away at Liverpool. It looks like they'll be some games we will have to fill up the middle. I think that's exactly what we will see now.
Livid Posted 17 September 2016 Posted 17 September 2016 Too early to call. Amartey had a poor game against Liverpool but who didn't. Mendy just looked like he was starting to get to grips against Arsenal when he got injured. Kingy can slot perfectly into midfield as easily as he can disappear in there.
jim5000 Posted 17 September 2016 Posted 17 September 2016 I always thought King was more of an attacking midfielder, and would be great playing behind the strikers. I wanted to see him in the Okazaki roles behind Vardy last season, he has the range of passing, control, and ability to finish that Okazaki hasn't really demonstrated. In a midfield 2 though, King just isn't defensive enough.
Pete Campbell Posted 17 September 2016 Author Posted 17 September 2016 Amartey really laying claim to that spot so far today

Okay, allow me to rephrase. In a three man midfield, I would select Mendy as the pivot or defensive midfielder all day long, particularly in a possession oriented team, as I think Mendy's playing style is well suited to a system like this one. However, I don't feel that this was the right signing for the club, given the amount of work that will need to be done on his game, and the expenditure, I hope to be proved wrong, but I have watched him at Monaco, Nice, and City, and based on what I've seen, I would've chosen other targets. Not a slight against Mendy, just a comment that not every player's game suits ours. Take Kramaric for example. Fantastic technical player, very skillful, but ultimately not suited to our game.
STUHILL Posted 17 September 2016 Posted 17 September 2016 I watched Amartey closely today, and was impressed! To be this good already at 21 is a really good sign for us. If he is managed and coached well, he could be a top top player! Very excited to have him and hope he continues to improve, as there is no doubt he will need to, to stay in our side and cement that starting place. Curious to see how he performs against Manchester United next week. Another decent performance there, and I will be very hopeful that we have signed another gem.

I think we have .... and I think Mendy will be a real asset for us too. Both young and hungry. Think we have really moved on from the Inler fiasco and .... dare I say it ... the loss of Kante is softening.

Here is this season... quite interesting and surprising that Amartey has the most key passed and chances created and that DD bosses the tackles, whilst Mendy lots of interceptions (despite hardly playing). How can you have 0.25 assists.

He will go to France if it doesn't work out at Chelsea. He was never to keen about joining us originally & showed no loyalty this summer. So I think if he eventually was to be made available by Chelsea we wouldn't have any advantage over other clubs. That's my personal opinion any way.
