Pete Campbell Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amartey for me. I'd like to see King get more game time but I think its him or Drinkwater, not both.
Fox 4 Life Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amartey for now but I still think Mendy is the long term future. Would be stupid to write him off so early, he looked good against the swans before he got injured. King shouldn't even be in the question as a starter.
SecretPro Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amartey and Drinky seem to be building quite a good understanding. I'd keep him in, give Mendy something to fight for. As for King, good sub but he never starts for me unless we are really thin on the ground.
holyfox Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amartey for me. Still needs time to develop in the Kante role, but last night what impressed me was his positioning and simple passing. He didn't over complicate things, just played a blinder in covering and letting others deal with attacking. The zonal analysis between him and Drink was great to see after the match. Hoping he can build on this performance.

Babylon Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amartey needs regular games in that position to gain his positional understanding, the lad started out as a CB and I think only played one season at CDM so it's going to take time. He has all the raw ingrediants, would really like to see him get some decent game time this season, he's 21 and only going to improve. Interesting to see how Mendy does against some of your lesser opposition, we've only seen him play against teams that can make anyone (including Kante) look clueless on their day. King for me should never have been given a four year contract, especially when we're looking for another CM like Silva. He'll be relegated to 5th choice if we go back in January.

Mendy looks like a quality passer of the ball, issue I have with him is from the small amount we have seen of him he doesn't look like he wants to get stuck in with a good tackle. Obviously needs game time before we draw any real conclusions. What I do know is he has a bit of a fight on his hands to get back in the starting line-up.
StriderHiryu Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amartey. He's very rough around the edges, but the guy is only 21 years old! He was poor against Liverpool but the entire team was. I think given a good run of games in the team he could become a real asset. He's started 3 in a row now and you can already see the improvements. For me he has the most potential. No idea if he will step up to the grade of being a top class Premier League midfielder but the early signs are positive.

He was always more of a shielder than a tackler at Nice, just camped in front of the defense with two CM's in front of him. I still don't particularly understand the signing. If we were going to change shape or style, then I could see where he fit into it... but we don't seem to be doing either
lgfualol Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amartey. But Drinkwater, Amartey and Mendy (or Dramandy) against tough teams. With Amartey being so young I would like us to give him as much game time as poss. I have a feeling mendy will be a boss for us as well.
Finnegan Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 For the purely defensive / ball winning role - Amartey. In games we expect to dominate possession or to play the Drinkwater role if he's tired or injured, Mendy.
Bablemikey Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 I'd love to know what the actual stats are regarding our defence in midfield. Is there a trustworthy website where I could compare Drinkwater, Amartey & Kante?
Bablemikey Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 My impression is that DD is making more tackles and interceptions than Amartey right now. Until Amartey, or indeed Mendy, can reverse that position I really don't think we will see the best of our midfield and defence.
Wilson_6 Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Amarty and Drinkwater against teams without a brilliant midfield but when we play the top sides it needs to be a 3 of Amarty Dinks and Mendy

Here is this season... quite interesting and surprising that Amartey has the most key passed and chances created and that DD bosses the tackles, whilst Mendy lots of interceptions (despite hardly playing).
FoxonMaui Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 I agree with Baylon re Mendy, don't see how he fits for us based on what I have seen so far. Think he has been struggling with the frenetic pace of the Prem. He reminds me a bit of Inler that he needs one too many touches when it comes to moving the ball forward. His passing lanes are gone by the time he goes to make the pass. The Prem is very different to League 1. He's going to need time to adjust. My fear is that we could have done much better snapping up Gueye for 7m , half what we paid for Mendy and have had the rest towards buying cover for Drinkwater. We have no one who can remotely replace Drinkwater if he get injured or tired. Let's pray he survives until January.
m4DD0gg Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Some one else and those 3 as squad players and subs.
indierich06 Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Still haven't seen enough of Amartey. He's looked great against Swansea and Brugge, but he had an asbolute nightmare against Liverpool the other day (but then who didn't?). Would definitely stick with him against Burnley, and possibly Chelsea.
foxy boxing Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 amartey has more of a pysical presence than king or mendy but king has never let us down and mendy is young and learning and the three of them are different types of midfielders it is identifying there strenghts and weaknesses and where they can be most effective in the team either defensivly or offensively

Guest CityFan 06 Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 Well Amartey for me has shown some real good defensive qualities in his performances next to Drinkwater. Against Swansea in particular, Amartey was outstanding, also thought he was good last night v Club Brugge. Although we haven't seen much of Mendy, he looks as if he could be a great find. He has a balance between good distribution and defensive/tackling ability. To me he looks a good all round player. King again is another very good option for us. He has an excellent finishing ability, is consistently reliable in his performances and is instinctive in & around the box - he knows where to position himself. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't turn down another CM coming into the club (Silva in Jan possibly), but even if we don't I'm not concerned.

Very interesting stats. Thanks for that Babs. Albeit over just 4 games DD has outperformed Kante Of course its not directly comparable because they are playing in different games, but interesting nonetheless. In terms of actually making tackles, which is where I thought Kante excelled last season, DD is doing better than Amartey. I think this is key, I would want Amartey or Mendy to be making the majority of tackles allowing DD to affect the game going forwards more.
lcfcben76 Posted 15 September 2016 Posted 15 September 2016 I would say Amartey as first choice but there's definitely times we should mix it up, for example at United away I think we should flood the midfield more, 1 striker then Amartey and drinky CDM's and then King in a more advanced role to try and flood the midfield
