Now that we have reached the next stage of the Champions League what do we do in the January transfer window?

So, we are through to the last sixteen. A pat on the back for the lads, but we all know that much stiffer opposition is on its way. Bearing this in mind, and given that this could be a once in a life opportunity, I'm sure that the club wants to give it a real go. However, if we are being honest the current team may beat the likes of Brugge and Copenhagen but would struggle against better teams such as Leverkusen, Napoli etc.

What approach should we take in the January transfer window? Bear in mind, we need to consider bringing players in who are not cup tied and can play in the Champions League.

How much will Claudio have to spend? Well, we know that we were keen on Silva for around £25m, so that figure should be the starting point for the transfer kitty. Let's assume that the likes of Schlupp and Ulloa will be on their way - that ought to bring in circa £20m. In view of our progress in the Champions League and the financial benefits arising, I would imagine that our owners may chip in with a further £15-20m. The transfer budget could amount to somewhere in the region of £60-65m.

Who do we buy? I think we all agree that a combative, box-to-box midfielder is our priority (unless Mendey is our saviour). We seem to have sufficient forwards/wingers. Do we need to strengthen the defence? Who can we attract? Yes, we are in the Champions League but if we are struggling in the bottom half of the table will we have to lower our expectations?

We should go berserk IMO.

We'll never have this pulling power again and we should use it.

Adrien Silva and two solid, ball playing defenders are musts.

Problem is he could not play for us in the next round of the Champions League as he has already played for Sporting Lisbon

Be nice to buy one or two established premier league players rather than more kids or foreign league players I've never heard of before.

I was thinking along the same lines, but who fits the bill?

Doesn't matter. Winning the CL group is already a tremendous achievement. The rest is bonus. The PL should become now the priority. 2 Midfielders and two CBs. Oh and preferably experienced ones. No U-23.

Ideally think we need two centre midfielders, one more attack minded than the other and at least one if not two centre halves. Probably wishful thinking to get four decent players in but needs to be done early even if it's only one of each.

Schneidelin from United. Not getting a look in there, does a job defensively and not played in the CL.

Good shout. Probably get him for around £15m

A budget of £50 million to buy a first team ready CB and CM. Take £10 million for Jeff if he wants to leave. Keep Leo as back up for AFCON bound Slim.

Net outlay of £40 million which is less than we should get for our Champions League performance even if we go no further.

New targets: Champions League QF. FA cup 6th round (RR, Gray, Chilwell, Hernandez, Kaputska, James Mendy and Leo all start). 10th in the Prem.

The round of 16 appearance is worth €5.5 million. With all likelihood these will be the only two European games we play in at least the next 2 seasons. I don't see how or why those combine for us to lure players to Leicester or convince the owners to break the bank on players.

Do you know how much we would get if we get to the quarter-finals?

jose wants rid but he wants the money back on him £25 million

will probably get laughed at but John Obi Mikel can't get any game time and James McCarthy wants out at Everton

  • Group match victory: €1,500,000
  • Group match draw: €500,000
  • Round of 16: €5,500,000
  • Quarter-finals: €6,000,000
  • Semi-finals: €7,000,000
  • Losing finalist: €10,500,000
  • Winning the Final: €15,000,000

The draw for the last sixteen takes place on 12th December. Dependent on who we get, may have an impact on our transfer strategy in January. For example, if we draw Real Madrid or Bayern we may not be willing to spend as much if we drew Lyon or Benfica
