Guest CityFan 06 Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 In the summer, I was fairly content with our transfer work as a whole, excluding the lack of replacement for Kante of course. In my view, the two key reasons why we aren't seeing the best of our signings is because of the lack of game time (players being underused i.e Musa) and them being employed into a system which isn't working for us. Because of our form as a team this season, I don't think it should be down to individuals. Once/if we start to pick up form in the league, we will start to see the quality these players possess. I'm not denying our summer signings haven't been impressive, but I wouldn't write them off just yet. Barring Slimani, they've all not featured a great deal so it's difficult, in my opinion, to give an absolute clear assessment on them & their abilities/potential. Slimani, Musa, Mendy, Kapustka (?), Zieler, Hernandez. These players all have pedigree and I just think there's more to come from them. We are light in defenders though, so I'd imagine the club would be looking at this area for investment in January.
TJB-fox Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 I also think that it's mismanagement of players rather than actual ability within the squad that has mainly contributed to our poor form
lgfualol Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Considering pretty much everyone in our team has, at some point, been slated as not good enough, I agree.
Kitchandro Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 There's an argument for Mendy and Kapustka but the rest are just shit I'm afraid. Ability is quite easy to spot and the majority of signings just don't have any at this level. And that can't be taught.
Guest the fox Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 The only one I am worried about is Hernandez. For me slim was good until the last 2-3 games while playing out of his skin. Musa has what it takes to come good. Mendy was injured for most of the time so you can't judge him yet. But like musa, he will come good. And kapustka is disqualified because he is for the future so you can't judge him this season. The problem is we should have gone for CBs,fullbacks and a number 10 if we wanted to mix it a little. and that's the reason the summer transfers look "bad".
Tuna Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 What surprised me in the summer was that we did not return to countries where we had recruited successfully in the past, Germany and France and went for players from the Russian and Portugese leagues. There are always hits and misses but I'm surprised we spent top dollar in these leagues where we'd not done business before. Also, I think we thought Steve Walsh was a wizard in identifying talent. A good scout is remembered for his good finds (Kante, Fuchs and Mahrez) but remember this was the chief scout who also provided us with Futacs, Ben Marshall, Kramaric and Robbie Nielson. The higher our spending has gone the more magnified the failures are. Slimani was a bad buy as we'll likely have no re sale value when his contract is up. He's not shown me anything to suggest he's better than what we have. Mendy and Kapustka we can't really comment on so far, but Hernandez, Zieler and Musa are just not good enough for this level of football.

Premier league champions are expected to reinvest heavily the following summer. There was an added onus on us to do so mainly because we wouldn't be in the position to buy from the upper enchelon of players for a good while again. If we didn't go out and buy a 30m player people would've questioned us and put the management at lcfc under pressure. I get your point about scouting from different countries but you can't just expect our scouts to keep getting it lucky with Kante's, Mahrez', Vardys etc- there will be failures. I'd even go as far as saying that it's not the players'(Musa, Hernandez, Slimani etc) fault- they've been brought into a frankly below par squad who overachieved to a ridiculous level the previous year. As for Steve Walsh, he is a complete genius and I think we are severely missing his presence.
m4DD0gg Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Agree about Mendy he just needs time. Kaputska is young and it's a shame he has not yet had his chance. Zieler, hernandez, salami and musa are seriously crap. Not Schlupp crap but crap none the less.
Karljohn Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 16m Musa and 29m Slimani and the hope is that they will come good. 45m on 2 players....they should be able to do the business already for that amount of money, waiting for them to come good isn't optional right now!
Guest Manini Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Still waiting for Zouma Bakayogo to come good tbf
Bostonfox73 Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Slimani is a dud, pure and simple, no touch, slower than he looks and couldn't head a bus queue! Ulloa far better all round player which shows how bad Slimani is! Musa second touch tackle is a total headless chicken! Hernandez is just terrible! Mendy will be a top signing and for me should already have been back in prem starting 11 after Porto game as a 75% fit Mendy twice as good as King!

norwichfox Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 The expectation from me was a team carrying on to around 75% of last seasons form, but circumstances (pre season, transfer distractions for Vardy and Mahrez, massive wage rises, Injury, p155 poor refereeing decisions and loss of Kante) have dictated otherwise, and no doubt have disrupted the plans as to how players are introduced into our side. Musa showed himself to have potential in the Barcelona match, has good ability and will come good. Mendy I'm reasonably sure will come good and will provide some much wanted options for the midfield, with the incoming Ndidi. Kapustka is a strange one, disappeared from any first team scenario for the time being, I'm sort of expecting him to be looking for an early exit (I hope not the lad has potential) Hernandez may turn out to be a useful squad player and will be thereabouts in and out of the line up. Slimani may come good with service, but so could most players around the £10 to 20M mark, was he a a panic buy? I hope I'm proven to be wrong about him. I'd prefer that we bought a forward who can run with the ball and have the ability to find another player as well as the ability to put the ball in the net on a regular basis. Zeiler should not be a first choice goalkeeper but we aren't going to get a GK anywhere near Kaspers standard that will be prepared to spend his time warming the bench, playing in 3rd round FA cup, and League Cup matches, so I reckon he'll be around a while. I'm hoping Daniel Iversen turns out to be a quality GK.but that's going to take a few years.

murphy Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 The worrying thing is that, Mendy aside, our new signings haven't had minutes because they can't force their way into a woefully under performing team.

Legend_in_blue Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Zieler is poor for a backup GK. That goal he completely fluffed, the shot that was taken from just outside the box - it was as if he was disappearing from time itself, just like Marty McFly in Back to the Future when he's strumming the guitar. His hands completely disappeared for a few seconds. Since then I've not been convinced by him, and certainly wasn't impressed before his Marty McFly moment either. Hernandez - not convinced by him either. But as Premier League champions, why are we bringing in free transfers from Spain who have spent the majority of playing time in the second tier? It isn't going to significantly improve us, as has been the case. Other than giving us a long throw threat from both flanks, which I absolutely hate to see. Long throws should be banned, as should manure. Kapustka - This guy must be dreadful if he can't get in ahead of Albrighton. So why buy him? He can't be any worse than Albrighton surely? Musa - From what I've seen of this guy, I think he's being mismanaged. He does have ability but he's not being utilised correctly in the team at all. It's clear he can't play on the wing and it's clear he's no like for like replacement for Vardy, so what is he and how does he fit into a system that the manager refuses to change? Placing Musa in this system is like putting the strong stuff in the Delorean, fingers crossed hoping it'll work, but it backfires on you and eventually it blows. Mendy - This guy needs "more time". Slimani - He comes here with a big price tag on his head and we all expect something half decent at least. Apart from a few glimpses of quality, he mainly disappoints. It's like getting your hand on that Gray's Sports Almanac, only to discover you've ended up with just the cover over Oh La La..... As for CR, here's hoping he doesn't get "that fax". His business over the next window needs to be more astute for this not to happen - he's almost Outta Time!
Merging Cultures Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Musa is a great player. I've watched him quite a bit. He will come good.I don't know about the others so I won't put my balls on the line. But seriously, Musa is a great player.
l444ry Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Easy to be wise after the event. Musa looked decent pre-season and Slimani was all the rage after he scored a few. The bigger problem for Ranieri is that many of the existing players have just simply underperformed.

To date Musa is a disappointment and that's being kind to him!

Didier Drogba was really crap in his first season at Chelsea iirc, look how that turned out.
Barky Posted 31 December 2016 Posted 31 December 2016 Everyone keeps bringing up the money but in a world where Troy Deeney is valued at £35m+ Slimani looks ok and Musa looks like a bargain.
Karljohn Posted 31 December 2016 Posted 31 December 2016 Drogba scored 16 that first season. WBA bid 15m for Slimani and he was on his way until we came in. It's poor business. As for Musa I fail to see how he improves the team.
