Stadt Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 Good move for all parties, they get a fantastic player for that level whilst he regains the necessary level of fitness.
surrifox Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 I think we should have looked at Hourihane - looks a decent player ( probably not African enough for our scouting team though)
Kitchandro Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 Hopefully he pulls up trees and comes back raring to go. Considering we've still got Amartey on the books I'll be annoyed if James regains full fitness and we don't bring him back.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 Yeah I could see that happening to be fair. Game time would be beneficial for him after his injury, and he'd be playing at a level which he is proven to do very well in. He'd be a real coup for Barnsley. I wouldn't really want to sell James permanently, but I do wonder sometimes how he is going to get in here.

If he was fit and playing like he did 2 seasons ago he'd be well in with a chance of starting. He was better then than King and Amartey are now, the jury's out on Mendy & Ndidi. Either way it's hard to argue that he wouldn't deserve a chance if we kept playing like this.
katieakita Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 Matty needs game time and playing for our under 23,s wont help. Barnsley would get him playing week in week out and getting the match fitness he needs.
MarkDeVirus Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 No disrespect to Barnsley, but James is far too good for them.

By definition you are disrespectIng Barnsley with that statement. Getting him playing again will be good for him and us. If it's Championshipfootball at Barnsley then so be it.
kingfox Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 I hope he goes there tbh, they've been doing incredibly well this season with a young squad. Won't score the goals Hourihane has; however if he can show good fitness and get back playing like we know he can, then Barnsley will have one of the best midfielders in the league. I really hope everything goes well for him because he is incredibly talented and deserves a run of games.

Yeah, I'd agree on a majority of that. Him and Drinkwater (as I remember) formed a smart CM partnership in the 2013/14 season. Being as this looks like a loan deal maybe he's still in future plans?

Thracian Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 For the time being I just hope he stays fit and gives himself a future.

STUHILL Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 Good move for him and us. He needs games. Gives us a chance to assess him and whether he can be useful for us next season. We have enough defensive type midfielders now and hoping we sign another attacking type one in this window. Would have liked him to have gone to a slighty better team, Villa was mentioned etc, but at least we know he will likely start every game for them.

When him and Drinky got us to the Prem, he was just as good as Drinkwater. Who's to say he wouldn't have got an England call up if he'd stayed fit? Just feel even lacking match fitness, he'd still be better than King.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 They're currently eighth and fighting for a playoff place. Good move for him
foxes21 Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 surprised a pl club didnt come in for hourihane

Would you have said 'too good for Villa' if he went there on loan? Barnsley are currently challenging for a play off place and James needs game time. The fact that it's Barnsley is irrelevant.

When fully match fit and not trying to resurrect his career though, would be good for him to get real game time, and Barnsley or mk dons etc, doesn't matter where, as long he's starting week in, week out.
katieakita Posted 24 January 2017 Posted 24 January 2017 He needs to play and play regular, if that is at Barnsley so be it. No point him going somewhere and not playing every game, from a selfish point of view he needs to play and stand out as if he cant stand out for them it leaves him nowhere near our first team.
