What was encouraging with James was an interview he gave, where he said he's determined to be at the club despite doing excellently at Barnsley.

He could become the real star for Barnsley for years to come, they really rate him. However, he's showing intent to stay with us so I hope we reflect this. You'd question if we let him stay at Barnsley permanently, that other PL clubs would come in for him; I can see him suiting Burnley, possibly Everton (Walsh link) and West Brom. That's just three off the top of my head.

I wish the guy well but he is in his comfort zone in the championship. We have moved on and I can't see

him featuring again , same with Andy King

At the time of his injury we were lower mid table (with Matty being one of our stand out players). We are now lower mid table. Stop talking rot.

Was at the Barnsley game today, looked pretty average to be honest. He plays more of a holding role for them. Think he'd look better if he had better players around him.

Hard to say as it's only one game, he wasn't bad, broke up a few attacks and did the simple things right, just didn't get involved enough imo.

Because I don't think he had a good game?

Matty seems to have cemented himself as a starter and key player at Barnsley. He must be almost back to full fitness now, delighted for the bloke.

Provided and hoping he can avoid any further injuries, I would love to see him take the place of Mendy in our squad, as the first reserve after Ndidi and Drinky and pushing them for a first-team place next season. The lad is just too talented to let him leave.

MJ is in a different class to Amartey, who unless he's going to be tried at CB should be sold in the summer. People rating DA as a PL midfielder is laughable.

I doubt we've seen Mendy fit, but from what I have seen Jaymo is better than him also.

Got a feeling he will do pre-season with us and then be sent on loan again, although I know his contract is running out.

However, James was with us during some memorable times, and has always acquitted himself well. If not for his injury, he would have played a much bigger role in recent times. I'd like to hope the club give him another chance, and that he can take it. When we first got promoted back to the Premier League he was the player I thought was most likely to get an England cap in the squad. He was a young but talented midfielder with room to improve.

I'm all for giving him a chance again and certainly Drinkwater has done very well having not impressed in his first season, but I don't actually remember Matty James being that good for us at all. What type of midfielder is he? He's not a playmaker, not a box-to-box, not a ball winner. He's trier, but I'm not convinced he has real quality.

I might well be in the minority here, and certainly have nothing against him, but keen to hear people's thoughts on what he can bring that would improve the side.

He's been playing DM for Barnsley and seems to be playing a more Drinkwater-esque role for them, rather than the box to box destroyer he was 2 years ago. Maybe a back up for Drinkwater's position next season?

Personally I saw him as a box to box midfielder, who'd do the dirty work up and down the pitch, which helped Drinkwater/Cambiasso shine. I don't know whether he's good enough for that role now, considering we have Ndidi & could sign a better player than James to be back up for Ndidi also. From what Barnsley fans have been saying, he could be a back up for Drinkwater's position.

I hope he's in the squad next season.

If we want to improve as a club we need to build in the off season. This requires buying players better than our current playes as this then keeps players on their toes etc fighting for a first team spot. I can't see Matty James pushing Drinkwater for a first team spot, certainly not Ndidi. Would be a good squad player though.

We can trust Shakespeare completely to assess, after pre-season, whether Jamesis up to performing for us next season, and in what role.

Really ? Moved on ? Most of our midfield look headed to the championship all season

Infact most of them played in the championship and played thebest football in their careers down there apart from 15/16

reality needs to kick in for some on here

matty James is class all he was missing was stamina and strength and he looks to have gained both !

Can't wait to see him back , Shaky has HUGE time for him

Think that fact shakey is in charge that he might have a future with us,but I think that depends on whether shaky gets the job full time?

James already kept him out of our team for long periods, if he got back to

his best there is no reason he can't get close to doing the same again.

Criminally underrated player for us previously.

Take a look at the stats I posted previously. Only weakness the lad had was shooting if you ask me.

This is going to be a HUGE preseason for him. If he can keep injury-free, stay involved with the first team during the whole pre-season, get plenty of minutes under his belt and arrive at the first game of the season fully match-fit, he'll be a contender and a much needed quality alternative to Drinkwater.

We may buy as well - Adrien Silva maybe - but having James fully fit and injury free will be a boost. He has the ability.

He certainly deserves a full pre-season with us. I think a lot depends on where we see Amartey playing long-term. King will always be around and is a useful back-up, who seems content with being a bit-part player and filling in whenever needed. We also now have N'didi, who will start every game you would have thought, as well as Drinky alongside him. Mendy is an unknown and rightly deserves a pre-season and 6 months too. 4 games is not enough to write him off yet. I'd be tempted to give James the same and perhaps make a decision on both in January.

I'm also cautious that we do need to make a step-up for next season, and we may be looking at signing a top CM, similar to an Adrien Silva. If we do, then a quicker judgement on James and Mendy may have to be made for the sake of both their careers. Will have to see what Shakey does, but be great to see him back playing for us in the Prem.
