Terrorist attack in Stockholm

Recommended Posts

It's a sad indication of the state of the world that something like this happens and it's automatically assumed that it's some sort of deliberate terrorist attack. Don't get me wrong, it most likely is, under the circumstances, but how do we know that it wasn't a driver falling asleep at the wheel, or some other medical disaster causing the driver to pass out?

Because the Swedish PM says so.

Vehicle confirmed as stolen and authorities saying it was clearly driven intentionally. Now hearing reports of shots fired elsewhere in the city.

You sort of contradict yourself there.

how?

Well it wouldn't be a 'sad indication of the state of the world' if a driver fell asleep at the wheel it would be an accident.

That's not what i'm saying though is it.

I'm saying its sad that a lorry crashes into people and its automatically assumed that it's a terrorist attack.

I then went on to say How do we know if it wasn't simply an accident and not an act of terror.

Expect more of this minor level terrorism, it's so much easier to put something like this together.

I see.

If you had written... It's a sad indication of the state of the world that when something like this happens it is automatically assumed it is a deliberate act of terrorism.  Please accept my apologies for misunderstanding your comment.

Because it was hijacked

We know that now, but at the time this thread started, for all we knew it COULD have just been an accident. That's the point i was trying to make. We hear things like that and automatically assume it must be a terrorist act.

AH my bad, but yeah, I hate when news outlets jump to conclusions immediately. But "terrorist" sells better than "crazy  man"

It's a sad indication of the state of the world when something like this happens. Assuming it's a terrorist attack is a logical conclusion.

So much violence around, it's depressing as fvck.

These attacks seem to be happening so frequently these days that they're kind of all merging into one for me now. I'm struggling to distinguish one from another and all this violence seems to be the norm. I do wonder what the world will be like when my young kids grow up and part of me is glad I'll be long dead and buried so won't have to witness it...

Your point throws out an interesting observation for me on why there is hope things may change - because as you and others have alluded to, there's almost a normalisation to these type of events now, with people not part of the immediate impact becoming desensitised and just accepting the news as part of life in general.

This therefore suggests these what could be described as "lower level" attacks are suffering from diminishing returns and that could be enough to deter would be terroists from these type of attacks.

Even if that means a few are more minded to go for something "higher level" rather than nothing at all, that requires more organisation / money / equipment / people which gives security services much more scope for catching these plots and networks before they happen.

These vile attacks by vehicles are almost impossible to stop, as they need no forward group planning. Any crazed Muslim extremist can decide to carry out such attacks. It could be Mr. so called "nice guy" living in your road.

I have become wary of all Muslims now, a view held by most of my friends and neighbours. Maybe it's not right, but tolerance is eroding fast.

The really sad thing is this twisted ideology of religion. Religion is supposed to promote peace and goodwill to everyone and it is scary how belief untamed by reason can unleash such sick twisted dark forces.

How is that position likely to help things or protect you in any way?

Its popular to point fingers at religious belief these days, but political belief can also have the same effect. The issue is not being able to listen and be accepting of another view.

Yeah, treating people as things is an ideology that transcends religion.

Mao and Stalin used ideas used by religions throughout the ages to eliminate 'undesirables' - they just put themselves or 'the Party' in the place of a deity.

It's been said before but will be said again here: there's nothing more dangerous than fundamentalist belief in a God...or in a man or group that thinks they are one.

I find it really sad that you now feel that way.

The vast majority of Muslims I've met in my lifetime have been kind and thoughtful souls. It's a real shame that the odd nutter has caused you to feel that way about an entire religion.

If I was as stand up Muslim person I'd be distraught that people would be more wary of me now just because of the actions of a few fanatics. I feel really sorry for the Muslim community in general who have to keep defending themselves against this shit.

I work with many muslims and each and everyone is a decent person. Shame that they are all being tarred with the same brush.

Are they?
