Benguin Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Wenger: "Football is supposed to be centre backs passing the ball to each other for most of the game, That is exciting football and what the fans want to see."
urban.spaceman Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Who else fancies creating a petition to the Arsenal board to offer Wenger a new contract? We'd have to pose as Arsenal fans but we'll get a hell of a lot of support from fans of every team in the country!
HybridFox Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Sour grapes. Bet he was gutted he couldn't sign our Vards
Corky Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 "The responsibility of people who make the rules is always to encourage teams who want to play, because that is what you want to see". So what is he suggesting here? Bonus points for more possession? An extra goal for more shots on goal?
Chico1958 Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Arsenal will be playing Europa League next year unless they buck up their ideas I don't care what he says really............ They have a great history But our recent history has been much more exciting around the world Our Poccession of the Premier League Trophy was the only poccession that mattered
Jattdogg Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 What a silly tw@t. Do you want us to just let you score and win games so that you can win the league again? Do you need that much help? Time for this old, sad dinosaur to retire. Some people love counter attacking and defensive play while otthers love possession and walk it into the net goals. Whichever combination you like and play good for you. Its called tactics. Change, adapt, evolve. You cant do any of that wenger. Fvck off you sad bell end. Take your w@nker twitter/instragram photo taken posing players with ya as well.
fazzyfox Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 The only remotely interesting point he makes is that it's not just the lesser resourced clubs doing it but Chelsea with all their wealth and opportunities. In modern times Chelsea have won things by being physically tough and resilient along with a cutting edge, when the balance is right they tend to regularly win things, the choice between Matic and Fabregas being a prime example. The stats may say Chelsea have a low amount of possession but whereabouts on the pitch do their opponents have that extra possession when playing against them? If the ball is between the box and the half way line Kante makes it his, I've rarely seen them exposed behind their wing backs, which leaves the tedious probing for a glimmer of daylight from the middle of the opposition half, side to side, back to keeper etc. And once Chelsea are ahead as they often are, they let the opposition have the harmless possession, the damage on their possession stats not a worry for them. Probably the most organised side in the league to break down and with so many sides that are so cautious they'd rather shift the ball around rather than try to thread through the eye of a needle means they rack up the possession without coming close to hurting the opposition. Early mind games for the F.A. Cup final? Would Conte say "Counter attacking, defensive, us? I'll show him!" Would he hell!
surrifox Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Remember the good old days of Wenger moaning that Stoke and West Brom were always bullying his cultured teams and were bad for the game
Corky Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Despite our teams not being willing to take the initiative, let's look at some statistics. Goals scored: This season- Chelsea 75, Arsenal 65. Last season- Leicester 68, Arsenal 65. 2014/15- Chelsea 73, Arsenal 71.
gerrytaggart Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Chelsea worried Wenger success could damage football.
Kitchandro Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 3 hours ago, Corky said: "The responsibility of people who make the rules is always to encourage teams who want to play, because that is what you want to see". So what is he suggesting here? Bonus points for more possession? An extra goal for more shots on goal? Who said anything about shots? Arsenal may have more possession but they almost never shoot, that's why they're boring.
AmarteyAndChill Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 Just because he thinks football should be played in a certain way dosent mean he's right
Thracian Posted 11 May 2017 Posted 11 May 2017 Part of the thrlll of football is the tactical battle between different styles and variations of those styles and how opponents counter them. I'm not sure if he was really christened Wenger or Whinger - but somehow the team has come to reflect him with their constant theatricals and hassling of the referees if anyone dares interrupt the flow of Venger-view.
Long Eaton Fox Posted 11 May 2017 Posted 11 May 2017 Wenger you tw@t. The whole world enjoyed watching Leicester last season. What the whole world does not want to see is a whinging, moaning manager trying to manage a cheating bunch of pathetic bottlers.
gerrytaggart Posted 11 May 2017 Posted 11 May 2017 Football should be about passing sideways laps of honour and team selfies.
shen Posted 11 May 2017 Posted 11 May 2017 I can see where he's coming from. People here are laying into Wenger big time, but football has, in my lifetime, ebbed and flowed between defensive, counter-attacking football and possession-based football. Football would quickly become boring if every team played the same way. I don't mind managers having ideals and visions and sticking to them. You can argue he has failed to adapt, but I feel it's important to have characters that do not want to compromise those ideals and seek successful counter measures. These days Wenger is branded a has-been, a dinosaur, but his experience and achievements does command respect. I haven't met anyone that found e.g. Mourinho's brand of football entertaining. Some of our fans were threatening not to renew season tickets if someone like Pulis was appointed as our manager. Even the second half of last season had some criticising how we set up, but results made fans forgiving. This season, look how quickly the knives came out once the results deserted us. Just because we had success last season, I would suggest not to take Wenger's comments out of context.
