Jenks Posted 20 August 2017 Posted 20 August 2017 Southampton have started a fantastic initiative with The Big Issue, first combining to sell the match day program and then players helping vendors sell the magazine. Do people think this is something we could do here? How would we approach the club? Foxes Trust? Thoughts?

The Southampton big issue is £2.50 with half going to the sellers .Essentially worse thing you can do is give to people in the street cos you have no clue what they do with it . Plenty of officlal local authourity and charity help is available through the proper channels for folk who need it .

So 1st things 1st - the whole point of the big issue is to help homeless people so they can earn some money and eventually get off the streets. Secondly - My view is that if people are living on the street (for whatever reason), if they want to spend a few quid on booze and drugs, thats up to them. I'd rather they didn't, but who am i to judge, i'm not living outside! At least with the big issue they are earning their money not just sat there begging.

There is all manner of good help available.Not so much of an issue in Leicester but say London the big issue lads are all over you I'm quite happy to say no thanks as I do with door knockers and Jehovahs Witnesses on Narborough rd. Just no need for it people can feel intimidated into parting with cash on the street . At work we recently housed a guy who had been living in a park for years he couldn't cope with living in a flat in Leicester and cleared out within a month.Couldnt deal with walls electricity, bills,neighbours -sad but true.

You have no idea if the money you spend goes towards more alcohol and drugs which will further the mental problems that most homeless face. But the Big Issue foundation sounds like they support the seller to a better life. dynamark Posted 21 August 2017 Posted 21 August 2017 Fair comment I'm sure the big issue has been subject to scrutiny to get to where it sits today.Its just the parting with cash on the pavement that I'm not comfortable with. Probably worse are the charities harassing people and save a donkey asking for £2 a month on channel 16

But I guess with the big issue you are reasonably sure it's decent especially if it's done through the club and is legit. I'd support it.

GaelicFox Posted 22 August 2017 Posted 22 August 2017 Much prefer if profits from programs went to local children's charities like Rainbows or the UHL CH im sorry but the big issue sells a magazine already and raises fortunes for homeless people id happily donate some time to be a vendor if the profits were going to a local children's charity

It is a bit of a generalisation to assume the seller will immediatley cash in their profits on drink and drugs.

No doubt they do some good work but they are absolutely a business first and a charity second. Not that that diminishes the value of what they do, I just found it interesting/surprising.

I think this is the case with a lot of charities. You only have to look at what the Chief Exec of these charities earn. I tend to support local initiatives with my limited amount of money to donate, but that's my choice.

We did some work fitting out a call centre for Cancer Research a few years ago in Oxford very expensive piece of property and no expense spared .they did £4k on a water dispenser and sent two girls up from London by train and taxi to decide where the litter bins would be situated. Their main office is at The Angel Islington(monopoly) and is a very pricy building. Made me think a bit about charity

Does that mean you'd rather give to a donkey sanctuary that's down your street rather than a cancer charity that's on the other side of town? Surely, it has to be about the cause first and the location second? Pretty sure that people moan about the apparent wealth of charities to ease their own conscience when they book their next holiday or get that conservatory they've always wanted. The reality is that most charities are bloody good at making a little stretch a long way. As for this idea from the OP - it's a fine idea I reckon. Take it to the Trust and see what they say. Surely, there can be no harm in setting up a chat with the Big Issue Foundation?
