Koke Posted 23 August 2017 Posted 23 August 2017 I'll make a left field prediction. Drinkwater to Chelsea for £35m, and we sign Jack Wilshire for £5m. Some here may not rate Wilshere but we could ressurect his career and have a proper player on our hands.

We won the premier league with kante and drinkwater both moving forwards and switching the role between eachother. A.Madrid do a fantastic job of getting central players forward when needed, we need this creativity rather than very one dimentional players such as King, James, Drinkwater, Iborra who all play the same role pretty much identically. When King was allowed forward we looked dangerous, when Drinkwater moved forward prem title season we looked dangerous, because we knew we had kante there to clear up in defense. Hard comparing our tactical approach to A.Madrid as although it's similar and the basic roles are similar, they play in a different league that this formation is strong in. I personally feel a creative CM/CAM is what's needed to shake things up, Kings move last night for slimani a perfect example.

You're suggesting putting a player like sigurdsson in a midfield 2. That wouldn't work. In a 2 both players have to be able to defend.

If you want someone that can play CM/CAM and can defend Leon Goretzka is a perfect example. I've given so many examples above of players that have good defensive qualities. why focus on a player i threw in as an example whilst ignoring the list of other players. Worth noting that I also believe we should not be tying ourself to 1 approach and 1 formation. Again, A.Madrid have a good blend of CM players that can both defend and attack with a bit of flair, we don't in most cases.

We are so one dimensional, we need a CAM with some vision so we can change it up to something like a 4-2-3-1 and actually allow Vardy to sit on the back line ready for through balls. Weighted through balls don't need a lot of space behind to cause problems, over the top is pointless. Someone like Gylfi Sig would have been perfect because he can play in a 4-4-2 or in a CAM position which allows us to change formation without making too many changes, Ndidi can play CM and CDM which gives us flexibility. Without an attacking midfielder we will just be predictable this season, get someone in and let DD go if he wants to. Signing a CAM makes a lot of sense, but it needs to be the right kind of player. If we don't sign one, we are hardly predictable. You are ignoring what we have elsewhere on the field. Nacho grew up playing as a No. 10 in the academy. He is very comfortable playing as an SS in a 4-4-2, and he can easily drop back into more of a CAM role in a three forward line that Shakey has shown interest in playing since we went with it vs. Athletico in the 2H. With all the MFs we have acquired, if we keep Drinky, I expect we will also begin seeing some 3-5-2 (which would look like a 3-2-3-2) when we have the ball, where we would have Ndidi/Drinky play in front of the CBs and Iborra forward flanked by two wings, or Ndidi and Iborra back with Drinky playing more of a CAM/CM role, or we could see a very offensive look with Nacho flanked by two wings and Vardy/Slimani up top. There are a number of things we can do right now that will enhance our creativity and prevent the lame lump it fwd look we were forced into last season with teams double marking Mahrez and playing a deep line to keep Vardy contained. I think a bigger need than CAM is really a CB who is either a deadeye passer from the back, or another CB who can come fwd like Maguire. Watch the first half of the game against the German team this preseason, they played their fwds and a MF in front of our MFs, and we really struggled to move the ball from our CBs to our MFs. THAT is where our real flaw in the linkage is, CB to MF. We need to have a reliable way of stopping this strategy against us, we saw how devastating it was vs. Sevilla and vs. Athletico, they both did that AND pressed, we lost tens of minutes of possession bc we didn't have the personnel to deal. Shakey signed Iborra and Maguire, they go a long way towards solving this, Iborra can ably act as a pivot for our CBs as we move the ball fwd, which will draw the attention off our MF and allow for more possession. But we need another CB who can take pressure off Maguire (we could also in theory replace Fuchs with Chilwell, though the loss to our defense would be sizable). We are both on the same page re the need for flexibility. I think we both see we need to move to a more modern formation, perhaps a 4-4-2 when defending that flows into a 3-5-2 when attacking. A player like you describe would go a long way towards allowing that. But we can do it by committee now to some extent. Iborra is very strong on the ball, and an excellent passer with good vision, and Drinky was very adept doing the same when we won the title, as playing next to Kante allowed him the freedom to range fwd and take pressure off Mahrez. We can rotate them fwd, allowing a break for each and keeping them fresh, it will be a very different look than what had last season, especially when we pull Shinji for a goal-scoring threat. My point is we have options if guys are healthy. We are actually moving towards a more modern formation, it is very obvious to me with the personnel we are adding. But we need the right players. Gylfi checked a LOT of boxes for us, not just as a CAM, but as an accomplished Premier League player with tremendous set piece ability and an unassuming personality which would've allowed him to slide right in. We are clearly ready to pay big money to sign a CAM, but it needs to be the right fit. We are unquestionably looking. We have added four quality players this window. Management has been smart in identifying quality targets, and I expect that to continue this week. But even if we miss on a CAM, I cannot see us stifled the way you suggest. Nacho can play both fwd and MF. Iborra can play up and down the center of the pitch. Just the addition of those two allow us to ably switch formations midstream, and to change the angles of attack on a whim. We have been very predictable in the recent past, but we won't be this season if we are healthy.

cityfanlee23 Posted 23 August 2017 Posted 23 August 2017 Realistic players that can defend and attack off the top of my head: Shelvey Defour Bentaleb Delaney (bremen)

Why give an example that's completely irrelevant to us? That's like someone saying we need a winger and me giving Osmane Dembele as an example. It's completely irrelevant to our club. As for Defour, he tends to play in a 3 as he doesn't have the positional discipline to play in a 2.

What is the point in giving an example if it has no relevance to us at all? I gave an example of the mould of player I want us to go for and explained why. Because the point of it being a ****ing example is that it's a rule of thumb, I literally just gave you the definition of the word "Example" and you're still questioning it. Example : a thing characteristic of its kind or illustrating a general rule. This really isnt hard to grasp, If you said we need a winger I could give you EXAMPLES of what sort of players we could go for, For example I could say "Let's get a Mahrez type player in" (Agile, skillful, decent vision, relatively quick) Or I could give an example of a player like Chris brunt (Strong, great crosser, good passer, relatively good in defence aswell as attack) The entire point of an example is that it does not have to be in the sense that I am saying "go out and sign Gylfi", It's entirely relevant in the fact I'm giving you an EXAMPLE of the mould of player I would like (Relatively strong, agile, vision, passing, shooting, can tackle) By all means disagree with my opinion on what type of player we should sign and why, but ffs don't question me giving an example saying it's not relevant when by definition it's completely relevant in the context I've defined. It's like getting blood out of a stone and you've dragged this on to the boredom of everyone, what i've said is entirely relevant to the opinion I gave, I'm not going to entertain your nonsense any longer on this subject, you clearly need to read the definition and go back over the conversation.
