We're still Leicester city FC, he was better than Drinkwater when he was playing. Drinkies just come off a shocking season without kante next to him and you want to knock the player he replaced? I know exactly who Leicester City are. I'm not under any illusion that we are now an elite club who can only play £20M+ signings. As long as we are in the top division my first goal for every season will be to get enough points for survival. I just don't think James is a Premier League quality player. Yes he was good at Championship level. But so were Richie De Laet and David Nugent. I also don't think either of them should be signed up on long-term contracts. And while survival will always be my first priority, I'm not afraid to say that I want more for our club. There is nothing wrong with ambition. While we are by no means an elite club there is no reason why we should not aspire to be. Indeed we have a manager who says the same when he talks about his ambition to get back in to European competition. Are you seriously telling me that players of the ability of James and Ulloa, at top-flight level, not second-tier level, are going to achieve that?
Stadt Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 Yeah as a Leicester fan I also think our best players should be pushing for moves away

Glad you aren't on the board, you'd fire Shakey and sell Mahrez and Drinky tomorrow. No I wouldn't sell either Mahrez or Drinkwater. But I also wouldn't give new contracts to sub-standard quality players which may make the likes of Mahrez and Drinkwater want to leave for a club with actual ambition.

We need squad players, I'm not happy with Leo signing a new contract but Matty James is a brilliant squad player. Every club in the world looking to do business seems to have struggled this summer, we're no different.

Yes, James is Drinky's best friend in the squad. Squad unity and togetherness is important, too. We also signed Kelechi and Iborra. If you prefer, you could see Ulloa and James purely as squad depth/insurance to come off the bench while the previous two are currently injured. I think the issue here is many of us think James is indeed PL quality while you don't. We'll agree to disagree on that.
Spudulike Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 What's the point of contracts ?? He'll be gone as soon as he decides that he wants to play in the UCL.

The point of contracts is so the club can get a fee for him. James is a decent player. He's better than King & Amartey. If we decide to sell James at least we will get £12-15m for him.
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 James is ok. I'm ok with him staying at the club. Solid. Nowt more

How on Earth you can compare James to De Laet and Nugent I don't know. He was always in the group above them talent wise in The championship. There is little evidence he's not good enough for the premier league as yet. Behind Cambiasso he was the cm who looked our best bet our first season up, starting more games at the expense of DD. He hasn't had the chance as yet to play in a functioning unit with better players, other than the few games in the great escape before his injury. The injury robbed him of that chance, where as people like DD, Wes, Vardy etc flourished with it. Maybe he'll never show his previous form at this level, but writing him off is a joke. The likes of De Laet, Nuge, Konch, King, Moore etc all had glaring flaws that looked like it would make it a struggle at this level. James always has a solid all round game (the stats back that up) and was always a huge miss if injured.

Arsenal signed Lacazette and their players still want to leave for Chelsea. Doesn't matter who we sign, until we've won dozens of trophies over a decade people will always prefer moves to "big" clubs who pay big money and win big trophies. Fact of life. That's not going to be us unless the owners pump in a few billion.

baldeagle Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 I'd much prefer James as a back up midfielder than Kingy . I like them both but I'd choose James all day long ahead of King
dmayne7 Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 Probably going to be on 30k a week which is nothing atm. Good move

Well I did plenty of times, he was in group of players that always looked the best bet to make the step up. The extra level of ability was clear. The times we struggled when he was missing was equally as clear. The win percentages at the time with and without him highlighted it. His personal stats highlighted it.

Shakespeare talks about qualifying for Europe and then signs up Championship players. Your job is to manage the team. Not to be the players friend and show loyalty to players based on length of service even though they clearly have nothing to offer at this level. Christ, we were linked with the likes of Sigurdsson and Silva and we end up with Matty f'n James. And don't even start with how great he was 3 SEASONS AGO because he wasn't great. And we've won a Premier League since then and supposedly have European ambitions. He is not good enough. Seriously regretting hiring Shakespeare now. No wonder Mahrez wants to leave. And Drinkwater should do absolutely everything he can now to push through that move to Chelsea. I agree with these comments. James unfortunately isn't the standard of player that we need to improve the squad. Barnsley is hardly a standard we need to achieve. Why wouldn't any other aspiring championship club or any club battling relegation in the prem show any interest in his services? i don't think he had a good game today. He gave the ball away a lot and never really imposed himself on the game. i see him nowhere near the standard of Matic , Kante, Fernandinho etc i may be wrong but Iborra looks to have more potential and a better option than 'matty' James

Prepping for the championship or something? He's a well-above average squad player. If we were healthy at MF, and were bringing in Matty James as a substitute instead of Andy King, we'd all have felt a helluva more confident today. This move in no way precludes us going after better MFs.

I am yet to be convinced as i havent seen much of his play (other that youtube vids) BUT he has good providence (dunno if thats for paintings only but seems to make sence.) And he is very nice on the eyes...
