Only speaking from experience and no idea if its coincidence but I lived less than half a mile from to where that girl was said to live off the south circular road and since moved and my asthma is heaps better now, so I wouldnt be surprised at all if one of the main contributions to her death was air pollution.

I’m pleased that your asthma is better. I think the poor girl might have had other issues and medical problems. It hasn’t been proven that it is the air alone. Who’s to say that it’s only from cars?

If I might ask a question here for the sake of clarity:

Is the point being made here that the environmental issue exists but the solution to help solve it is being executed badly, or is it that the environmental issue doesn't exist at all?

I'd like to know which it is, please.

The fines for entering in a non compliant car aren’t going to make the air any better.
I think the air has improved over the last 30 years anyway, but it’s just an opportunity to make poor people pay. Diesel cars before 2016 will liable. Obviously people with money can change their cars.

Ah, so it's a problem with implementation then?

I would agree with that, given rich folks can simply pay up and keep polluting.

A better solution is required, but at the same time I wouldn't fault anyone at least looking to prioritise long term environmental issues over short term material ones.

I think they almost certainly will introduce a pay per miles system in the future.
Khan said that “children in hospitals are drawing their last breath”. What utter lies.

I’m sure children and adults in other parts of the country have asthma, it’s not exclusively London.

I think the issue is here is a matter of communication on a matter "invisible" to most people and how difficult it can be. If Khan simply stated scientific facts about it, most people simply wouldn't mutter something along the lines of "oh dear" and then keep doing what they're doing. So he used quite sensational rhetoric instead to at least engage people with the topic, which of course has its own problems.

I've seen it before with other long term scientific issues that need addressing as a nation and a species but a lot of people simply don't notice.

Poor people in London don't have cars so don't worry.

My 2015 diesel is compliant so this is another bit of misinformation from FT's favourite right winger.

We all know a lot of the opposition to ULEZ is because of Khan, the fact he's Labour and, the other reason we'll not get into. Forgetting the fact it was your darling Mr Johnson and his government who drove this through. Amazing they have come away unscathed.

I wouldn't mind people debating ULEZ if they weren't so openly biased and misinformed.

Most rich people are not driving old polluting cars.

I expect you feel at home with your fellow leftie friends on here.
Do you live in London or have any idea about how people feel. So, you think it’s fine for the poorer in society, to pay every day for the privilege of going to work?
I thought being a leftie you wouldn’t want to see the poorest charged like this? Obviously you are all for it!!

I'm curious: do the supercars or expensive new big models that rich people do drive satisfy current emission regulations then? Genuine question, I guess they probably do.

There's a gulf between an old polluting banger and driving round in a Lambo though isn't it. When people talk about the wealthy in London they aren't talking about the neauveu rich footballers in their neon hyper cars.

They're talking about your upper middle class professional yuppies in German made hybrid luxury SUVs which probably kick out pretty damn low emissions by comparison, yeah.

Would you agree that air pollution is still a problem in London that needs addressing?

Or at least recent model petrol ones.  Some of us helpfully exported our non ULEZ compliant 2010 lumps to Australia so you folks can breathe clean air.

I was in Jakarta a few weeks ago, and I was coughing by the end of the week.  Most polluted city on earth apparently.  Grim.

Seoul isn't much better, but then that's not down to the cars, mostly.

Not particularly. As I said it’s a lot better than from 50 years ago. They pick on car drivers because they are easily taxed.

There are something like 42% of Londoners who don't have access to a car. In the inner boroughs the figure I understand is much higher and would it not be these people that suffer the most from pollution. The fact that things were worse decades ago is not much of an argument.
