Loss of love for the game.

Hi Guys,

Dont panic in any way as I have not lost the love for LCFC or watching them and cheering them on, however things are different in my own sporting endeavours.

I am now 37 and have played football all my life but it is only now and only in the last few weeks that I have found myself lacking interest in playing the game.

I play once a week but simply am suddenly not interested in being there.

My question is simply to all the chaps on here who have played football all their life and is simply have you gone through this?

If so, did you find it was a permenant thing and your own hobbies and activity interests went in a different direction?

any opinion welcome.

All i can say is try to play through it, or change who you are playing with or where you are playing.

Maybe its now more "serious" than you are or maybe they are younger and faster than you.

BUT.... believe me you are a LONG LONG time retired, I played till 43 (but in very pub leagues towrd the end) and then played 5 aside until last year (53) and I miss it sooooo much.

Eventually for me it was the team I played for that folded cud to the fact we were a team full of mates who got too old, though I wasn't ready to stop playing I was finding it harder me harder to get up in gas morning. However another mate formed a team for a six a side league and I've been playing that since.

im 42 and i can relate...I will say this to you... If you stop at the age you are at, it's going to be very difficult to get back into it... and if you eventually do, you'll be surprised at how absolutely knackered you feel the next day.. Also, expect to drop down a few levels if you do try and make a comeback.... you'll really notice the speed difference and stamina/endurance difference and most likely so will everyone else...

So think long and hard before you do stop playing..

I was always under the impression you were like 20 lol

I'm 36 was playing in a 5 a-side league a couple of years ago and got so pissed off with pointless refs, unreliable team mates and opposition that wanted to argue the toss over everything and kick and shove and play like 90s wimbledon, I just packed it in.

About a year later a mate was looking for a ringer and I said I could play, I was pretty rusty and gassed after 20  minutes, but realised how much I'd missed playing, been playing with them for about 6 months now, pulling off Zidane style roulettes and smashing in last minute winners.

What really peed me off, was when my last team got to a quarter final, and we struggled to get 11 players. Lost 3-0 to the eventual winners. I never used to miss a game, but the young lads now are out all night, so no chance of them getting up for football for a 10:30 kick off.

I had played for over twenty years and just got bored with it in the end. Plus, pot hunters, scrapping and mates of a similar age stopping playing.

5-aside or Vets football could be an option for you??

Absolutely I did.

Playing at a very average standard of Sunday League, I had various spells where I just couldn't be arsed to have to get up on a Sunday morning (especially after a skinfull) and get mi boots on to play on shitty pitches, only to ache for days after.

I'd started picking up niggly injuries that with age, were harder to shake off, such that it was becoming a real bind at work to have to walk about like John Wayne for Mon and Tues every week.

I finally gave in at about 40 ish.

I would say however, having played for some decent teams when younger, there is nothing like running out onto a freshly mowed footy pitch for the first game of the season. I still miss that feeling to this day.

I must say that I think most of you played at a higher level than I did. I played Sunday league up to about 10 years ago but only very sporadically. I know play about 7 a side with a regular group of mates which isn’t really competitive. This is good for me as I don’t really care if we win or lose and I always just played for fun of the game. I was a striker when younger but as time went by I Dion Dublinned myself into central defence. I still enjoyed it up to recently but now not so much. I don’t think there is much lower a level to go to now. I reckon I will take December off and see how I feel in the new year.

Thanks for all the advice.

Youre just getting old mate. Crap innit

lol

At my peak I was playing six times a week including Saturday and Sunday 11s games, I'm 33 and while I'd not use the word retired I currently play no competitive  football and have no desire to and it's a very odd feeling, so yes I get exactly what the OP is talking about. I think I just played that much it got boring.

Sunday morning level and competitive 5-a-side was/is as much as I did.

I have two self-imposed breaks - had enough of opposition who had zero braincells and argued with the ref constantly. I could feel myself being dragged to that level. I miss it a lot currently and plan on losing some weight in the new year, ready for next season. I play the odd corporate tournament for work and team-mates say I am a good player. I'm really not that good, just the opposition is normally total pants.

Yep, I used to play 3x a week and now I found myself getting massively frustrated at stupid stuff and that’s when I decided to stop playing.

That lasted about 18 months and I’ve recently got back to enjoying my football only to then get injured.

My advice would be to take a break, don’t put a time limit on it and see how you go.

Is there a reason you lost the love? Can you put your finger on why?

Ever considered refereeing maybe?

I find taking my best mate @Cheese and his blow up Dinosaur for a walk Sunday mornings makes up for not being able to get battered playing Sunday league football

Not to 37 but after 12years of Sat and Sun footy I just stopped at the same weekend for some reason I don't know. Clean break. Got a season ticket;

and a beer belly

33 Still playing still love the game. Will say the legs are tighter on Monday mornings.

I'm going to keep on playing until I can't physically do it anymore!
