First of all what has happened to our physio department. During Pearson's second spell and Ranieri's first season, there were constant stories of our ground breaking treatment centre, the Cryo-Chamber and how closely each player's physical condition was managed by the sports science team and it's impact was noticeable with the low number of injuries we had during that period.

Now we seem to have a new injury every week and previously indestructible players, like Morgan and Simpson are now both out injured. Huth has been out of action all season, there have been numerous niggles and knocks, like Vardy and Chilwell at the moment that just never happened a few seasons ago. Does anyone know if we changed anything, do we still have the cryo-chamber? Or is it just players like Morgan, Simpson, Huth, Vardy suffering the after effects of seasons of being injury free?

The other thing is what is your view on how Puel handled the busy festive period. In previous years there has been little rotation and sacrifice the FA Cup game, but this has been a particularly tough year with the 120 minute League Cup QF meaning we have been playing 2 games a week for a few weeks now. He has rotated and used the squad well for the forwards/midfield, but the defense, particularly RB and CBs have played pretty much every minute of it and tellingly 2 of those 3 are now injured. We also failed to win 5 games in that period, despite leading in 3 of them. Could we have done it better?

Players should be able to play 10 games in 31 days without problems. It simply means replacing training with matches ( which they'll enjoy more). This is nothing to what NBA players go through for 9 months.

Ours and everyone else's festive schedule does seem to have been even busier than ever. 4 games in 9 days has clearly put strain on players. It was only 3 between 26.12.16 - 2.1.17 last season. I also see we played 6 in 16 days this year compared to 4 in the same period leading to the new year last season.

I know it's been a busy schedule, but it has been like this all season, it feels like we have had more injuries and niggles than say Pearson's second spell and Ranieri's first season, I noticed it last season, but it has got worse this season. Does anyone know if we still have the cryo-chamber? Do we still have the same sports science team?

There is always an element of luck involved, but, the stats say that only Chelsea, West Brom and Burnely only had less injuries (that last 14 days or more) than us last season. Whilst only three teams had less injuries overall.

I terms of total days lost overall, then we were 4th with 885 days lost. Only Chelsea 877, Burnley 822 and West Brom 203 lost less days to injury.

It might seem like we're having more, but we still might we well ahead in terms injuries compared to others.

Cheers for those stats, where did you  find them? I did have a look for them, but without success. It would be interesting to know what it looks like this season so far, also to compare to 15/16 and 14/15 if they exist.

Of course it could just be luck and me misremembering things, do you not feel we have had a fair few injuries this season, and specifically ones that have caused us to change our team?

NBA players run about 2.5 miles a game, footballers often go 8/9 miles per game. I know they play more often, but 3 games a week would still mean they only do what most of the worst runners do in one football match. The roll on subs enables them to rest people far better as well. The distance covered in two games a week is more than most sports do by some distance.

NBA players may run less total miles but they flat out sprint and jump from a standing start, they change direction more and therefore the stress on their bodies is far more than a footballer who spends most of his time in a jog state. On top of that the NBA players play twice as many games and fly across states on a weekly basis (sometimes on a nightly basis). Footballers when playing 1 game a week still run miles during training sessions. My point is that replacing a training session with a match is not adding greatly to the wear and tear on a players body. Morgan's injury was due to him jumping into a tackle he should never have made and landing awkwardly. Jamie has had a groin problem for most of the last 4 years and Danny Simpson had also been carrying a strain. Both Jamie and Danny should have been rested - whether they had 2 games in a week or 1 game and a training session. The extra games are not the problem IMO.

You can’t really compare NBA games to Premier League games. Frequency may be an issue but the physicality is very different. (M

To the OP... When we won the league, players were playing through injuries and that seemed to be well documented. We didn’t really have the squad to rotate and keep up the high level performances. Every game meant everything to each player so they’d have had to be seriously crocked not to play. This season there isn’t the need to risk players who have niggles.

No underlying pattern or trend i dont think.

Simpson and morgan overstretched and injured themselves. That can happen.

Hectic and unfair scheduling doesnt help and some of our key players are quite old too

It was on someones blog, i just googled "days lost to injury in the premier league". Not sure where they took the graphics from.

It does feel like we've had a few, but then i thought that last season and we were still well above average.

Simmo, Wes and Vardy have all missed games in recent seasons due to injury, James has always suffered from the odd niggle.

This season and last season are probably more like the norm, and the title winning season was a bit of a freak, like West Broms last season.

Those numbers might also be skewed a bit with some clubs having players with broken legs or other more serious injuries taking a long time to heal

Basketball players spend half their time sat on the bench, they average about 25 minutes per game. Even then they certainly don't spend every second at full out sprints. Watch most games or videos and you'll see one or two bursts and the rest meandering about.

It's not worth comparing and saying x can do it so can y, when they are two totally different sports, with totally different stresses and strains. Different rules on subs etc, meaning totally different rest periods. different team sizes and rosters.

Training isn't like real matches, the intensity isn't there and people aren't going to go the extra mile they might when three points are needed. If it were the same you'd never hear the phrase "match fit". Would Wes have launched himself at someone like he did in training? Possibly not.

Is this the basketball forum.

They are big heavy guys for the most part and tend to have knee/ankle issues .Totally different sport.

Andy Murray with his hip issue could easily be finished -having just gone through two years of that myself you think you have groin/nerve problem initially but if its worn or wearing unevenly its broken.

He shouldn't have in the match either. It was a stupid, unnecessary foul all the way and a definite yellow. It was foolish and the injury wasn't a surprise.

I echo this. 15/16 was a freak season, injuries, or lack of them, were incredibly few. I'd imagine injuries are to be expected.

Not much physicality or falling over though. Different sports make different demands. Not many Tigers players would get in an NBA team, not many NBA players players would come out of a rugby match not feeling they'd been involved in a car crash and possibly ending up in A&E. Football and NBA  not comparable. Nobody in a training situation goes full tilt. In a real football game strong physical challenges are made in NBA they aren't.

I don't put the injuries down to a declining sports science department. If you look at the 3 players injured (not including Huth) they have all been mainstays in the team for pretty much the last two and a half years. Wear and tear happens and it will occur the older you get. Morgan in particular will need to be managed better, the older he gets in order to prolong his career. In fairness his injury was as a result of a stupid tackle. If he does many more of them he will find himself side-lined with his old mate Huth for a long time.

Our injury record is good compared to other clubs irrespective. Not sure your point.
