They were charging £9.95 for a pint of Camden hells at the O2 last night. Worst part is folk were actually paying it.

Popped into Red Dog saloon in Nottingham to catch the scores a few weeks ago.

Noticed the Hells on draft so ordered one. £6.75........

I felt absolutely ripped off, but I don't feel so bad now 😀

Anyone know any decent places in/around Shoreditch?

Wenlock Arms on Wenlock Road and The Griffin on Leonard Street. Also, The Commercial Tavern was always good but not been there for about a year.

Cheers I had noted the griffin as that looks decent.

If you go out the way to the Wenlock (probably my favourite in the country but I say that every week) have a look in the William IV (Shepherdess Walk) literally round the corner too mate

Barley Mow in Shoreditch proper is decent but bloody small

Nice one I’ll try and get to it

London is just unreal for pubs.

Been so many times and there is always somewhere new and interesting. It's almost overwhelming at times, the amount of options.

Anyway, I finally had a Beamish near Old Street station. Went down a treat.

London is great for pubs it’s just slightly annoying there are so many Greene King, Nicholson’s and Sam Smith’s.

With the right recommendations it’s the best pub city in the world and without them it’s a completely flaccid, expensive and dull place to drink.

Had one of these in Dublin last weekend, had a lot of funny faces for some reason; but was delicious

Sam Smiths' pubs aren't too bad. Great interiors and I actually quite like the beer. Last time I was in one they had a pint of mild for like 3.50.

Just remembered I recommended a Sam Smiths' pub to you to take the Norwegian LCFC fans to and you said you liked it, now I don't know what to believe anymore.

I like Spoons pubs in London because your typical spoons punters are usually only in the city as tourists and want to go to some shithole in Soho, and so in the spoons you usually just get students and workers who want a cheapish pint and grub. Plus they open late and serve inexpensive coffee which is more civilized than 90% of pubs in the UK.

I do like some Sam Smith’s individually - Cittie of Yorke was great (although £15 for two pints was steep even for the City).

Just in the aggregate they take up a lot of real estate.

London has a nice vibe with the pubs always busy and everyone spilling out onto the streets, but central London is pure pubco and chainville. Like everywhere really, the periphery and suburbs have the interesting places, but large parts of the centre are quite uninspiring. Wetherspoons is the best option in central London a lot of the time.

I was in London yesterday and I've never seen so many people down there getting stuck into cask before. Harvery's, Five Points, and Landlord flying off the shelf in the Stonegate pub!

If you go down a side street you'll find hidden gems tho. E.g. you'll find loads of recruiters and regional insurance salesmen 'on one' in the City at pubs like the astronomer, but if you keep walking past their TM Lewin shirts and vape clouds you'll find the bell which is excellent.

Depends on what we're classing as central here but got to respectfully but completely disagree with this brother. Holborn, Clerkenwell, Marylebone, Soho home to some fantastic pubs and that's just north of the river centrally.

Will add the Bell onto my maps for when I'm in the City

No hard feelings brother! I would mainly be referring to the square mile, but I also think this extends to parts of the west end and beyond. I'm not saying it's bad, and there are still some good options scattered about, I just don't think it's anything special considering it's the capital city and the amount of people it serves. There's lots of amazing pub buildings but they're often run by M&B/Greene King/Sam Smiths/ Fullers (who I don't mind)/ Stonegate etc serving macro beer. Out in places like Islington, Kentish Town, Hackney I think it's amazing.

My office used to be by Farringdon/Holborn. I thought it was decent, but nothing to rave about. Admittedly my finance colleagues wouldn't be up for the kind of interesting crawls that keep you occupied lol

Yeah there's some lovely jobs in Holborn mate, could throw a net over The Dolphin, Lady Ottoline, The Lamb, Perseverance and The Duke.

Agreed that it's easy to slip into £8 Nastro Azzuro territory there with a wrong move but there are stacks of gems tucked away.

The lamb, princess Louise and Holborn whippet (not sure if that is still around) are decent if you are ever back there

In my first job in the city my team would seek out All Bar One on a Thursday and Friday night for it's excellent Nastro Azzuro. Fresh out of Uni I willingly obliged lol

Speaking of good London boozers, the Lord John Russel at King's Cross does some pints for under £5. Can't remember if I mentioned it (proabbaly did). Nice sort of locally pub that really shouldn't be so cheap based on its surroundings.

Love that pub. Used to go there loads. As you say, feels like a local with a good mix of clientele. Also opposite the best bookshop in London and just over the road from a great greasy spoon
