Blue Bell - tiny and almost one of a kind. Very congenial and fun, beer is well kept.

The Phoenix - where I'd drink if I lived there. Great lager and cask options, multi-roomed, by happenstance my girlfriend and I ended up there with their quiz on so they brought out a massive plate of pork pie for each table, even though there was only two of us. Came second or third which was a good showing.

The Swan - feels a little like the Bath Hotel in Sheffield

Golden Ball - community pub so very buzzy and fun but felt a little like being at house party to me.

Then Market Cat isn;t on the guide but the best new Thornbridge pub, beer selection is excellent, likewise with Pivni. The only one that I stumbled on that wasn't recommended anywhere was the Three Cranes, very nice cask-led old man pub.

We ended up in there. Loved it

Got some tidy looking ones lined up for tomorrow - The Victoria, Hand & Marigold, Simon the Tanner all Bermondsey way

Also The Victoria in Leeds looks like it's finally got an opening date, pre Christmas — Kirkstall & Five Points joint venture. Was a beautiful pub before it closed years ago, trust them to work wonders with it

Victoria was a lovely gaff, owned by some blokes for 30 odd years, really good couple of Harvey's Best in there

Hand & Marigold has nailed being a new pub. Great choice, nice warm lighting, comfortable seating. No ****ing neon, no fake plants, no smell of frying. Really tidy gaff, hats off and fair play!

I really enjoyed the market cat and house of trembling madness. This was a couple of years back.

There's loads. One of the best places in the UK for pubs/beer. Even the average pubs have good beer selection. A few suggestions below:

York Tap in the station. Huge beer selection.

The Swan and The Slip for more cosy traditional pubs (next to each other)

Brew York and Market Cat for a more modern crafty vibe

House of Trembling Madness or Pivni for something a bit different

I second house of trembling madness.  Brewyork taphouse also decent for beer, usually lots of guests on and the food offering is usually decent. Also enjoyed Pivni.

Really enjoyed HOTM. I wasn't expecting the shop downstairs, so ended up buying my pals Christmas presents earlier than planned. (bottles of what we drank away at Bruges 2016)

Brew York was great too, we had food at the Yuzu street food place that shares the space. Brilliant idea and very busy despite it being a Thursday evening.

Less impressed with Punch Bowl, not a good choice of beers but still decent enough feel to it, just less authentic.

Overall York was fantastic, I haven't been since pre season 2013 and wouldn't have appreciated it anywhere near as much at the time, as I do/would now.

Another city I've visited that I've loved  and that's made me get frustrated with what Leicester could offer. Just a whole different vibe with more options and a good feel to it.

It's such a good little city. I'm meeting two mates there at the end of Jan and already can't wait. There's almost too much choice

Norwich is less than half the size of Leicester population wise and the centre feels about three times as big.

Leicester being a fairly big city, but feeling like Huddersfield with a deceased king museum needs to be studied.

Thing is even Huddersfield’s centre has some real corkers and for example (or did) have a proper brewery tap in the centre of the town, unlike Leicester

Couple of Blue Foxes in the Sorrel Fox on Tuesday night. One of my favourite cask beers. I have to go to Mountsorrel because the Fox Cub never has it on. Said it before, but that end of Mountsorrel with Sorrel Fox, Swan, and Pinsent (Waterside is okay too) has everything you'd want from a drink perspective.

I'm guessing as our city is very diverse  compared to others (not as many people drinking alcohol) and 2 uni's where their first thought isn't to go to a pub with cask beer, it won't get any better anytime soon unfortunately.

Way better on cask than keg isn't it.

If somebody good took on the old pub in Rothley (name escapes me) on the right as you head towards the crossroads or Welsic ln, it was up for sale recently - you'd have an amazing Rothley-Mountsorrel-Quorn crawl.

completely agree, it's average on keg. Sorrel Fox was heaving on a Tuesday night.

The cask is quality in Sorrel Fox, the keg is amazing in Pinsent (£6ish for 5%+ pints of Deya/Verdant etc), and then the Swan has a bit of both and the traditional pub feel. Gurkha New Delhi is also very good for a village curry house

The biggest miss in Rothley imo is the Royal Oak. Should be an absolute hit but it's properly crap, just an Everards gaff they barely give a shit about. Tiger on if you're lucky, naff strip lighting everywhere. Really desperate. It's virtually the focal point of a really nice village and should be legit but its just shite.

Mountsorrel is better than Quorn by a stretch. I could live in the Swan, by far and away the best pub in the county. Quorn is full of 5'6" Forest dads who run estate agents.

Yep, saw saw they were looking for somebody to take on the Royal Oak a while back. Badly needs a refurb and not the usual Everards panelling and 2010s upholstery jobby. Woodies is an excellent counter balance though.

Quorn’s Royal Oak and the Blacksmith’s are great V-neck free zones though

I love the Woodies man, historically always thought it was Deano but it's just broadly very good imo. Think I fall in love every time I go in n all which is a bonus

Agreed on that pair in Quorn. Also only been in the Apple Tree once (to watch some gazprom) and it wasn't as shit as I expected it to be, not a ringing endorsement but it was perfectly fine and wasn't full of people who'd try to suck themselves off.

The Apple Tree is good generally, beer selection is surprisingly decent. I work with somebody that lives around the corner so I’ve been a few times, the memorabilia is cool - half full of the aforementioned Forest cvnts though.

White Horse, Quorndon Fox, White Hart (not as bad) are the pits

Yeah the Oak and Blacksmiths are the best in Quorn. Royal Oak is good but it's been taken over by middle class Mums and is near impossible to get in. Blacksmiths has great character inside but the beer can be a bit boring in there.

Have you done the Navigation in Barrow yet? The only thing that lets it down is that it's owned by a pubco (Admiral Taverns), so the Landlord has his hands tied with beer selection. I think he does as well as he can on that front and he's allowed to do a beer festival once a year. He was telling us that it's an instant £5k fine if he puts on any beers which aren't through the pubco. Swan, Oak and Woodies are all freehouses which is why they are the best ones around here. These Pubcos just ruin all our fun...

However, I was chatting to someone from Rothley who now comes over to Quorn to drink in the Oak rather than the Woodies, because all the new builds in Rothley has turned the Woodies into a Deano danger zone lol

Yeah I went to the Navi’s beer festival and whenever I walk into Barrow always stop in for a pint. Saw it’s having a bit of a refurb so hope it’s a light touch.

I’ve not been into the Woodies for a while, very Cotton Traders last time I went in, overdue a visit.
