So many of the world great developments have been helped and brought about by the internet but so many of the worlds current problems are being facilitated by social media and the internet.

surely it’s time we started to hold people and companies accountable for their actions online , one way would be that for Anyone to open a social media account they would need to be over the age of 15 and Hold valid ID

I feel when you register online for and email address or social media account the platform accpting your application for that account would need to:

1) confirm your age

2) confirm your identity

3) confirm your address

if I register for an online Bookies I have to show all this NYC info (know your customer) so why shouldn’t we do the same with social media and email addresses.

It would start to protect our children , our communities and our society , the free for all that social media has become and the trolls , perverts and criminals hiding and using it need to be stopped or at least make things a bit harder for them

if you have nothing to hide you won’t have an issue with this

we can firm up data protection laws but ultimately if you don’t trust the companies then don’t open accounts with them

but when you look deeply at what’s going on in london , extremism , cyber crime , perverts , child abusers  etc... social media and use of the internet is at the heart of the issue !

I think its time we took control of the internet/social media  and ended the Wild West it has become !

Got to say uploading all this information to the internet and proof of age/address and having to somehow identify yourself online and making all these available for hackers sounds like a recipe for a dystopia of the lowest order.

There's not a great way of doing it yet. They've already talked about confirming status/age etc for porn but that has been put back because they're not sure of how to do it.

You've got to be careful with data given so many companies misuse it.

We probably had similar discussions when the printing press was invented. Society changes, for better and for worse and we all adapt.

That old chestnut gets trotted out every time someone wants to curtail civil liberties.

Internet censorship and control is the thin edge of a very Orwellian wedge

Agree.

I don't trust many companies online but still share my data with them (name, address etc).

There's plenty of sites I've not joined because they always want a phone number, I'm joining an internet site why do they want my phone number they have my email address.

I'm not giving that to them unless it benefits me as I don't want calls from them or worst still them selling my number on So FU!

I just make one up.

Also - an FYI for everyone - if a site needs an email address for registration purposes, there are plenty of places to get an untraceable temporary email address. Just Google temporary email address.

I always put in my old work phone number, I always have to farm calls from the guy that had my work number last so it’s only fair to share.

Absolutely. People forget that free sites are not "free".  They sell your data to earn an income.

The internet is a force for good but it is too easily open for abuse.

It is simply too easy to open multiple accounts with completely Micky Mouse details and never be traced. Then go and abuse kids, post extreme material or revenge porn.

The minimum age for most social media is 13 as per the terms and conditions of each site. Yet tons of kids younger than that get profiles.  The reason for the age limit is usually in line with US law and how it very strict with how firms like Facebook and Snapchat handle data of kids, it is so restrictive that the firms just say that their service is not for children, yet there is zero verification process to go through other than providing a date of birth that fits their t&c.

The fact is that there are too many children being abused by unverified abusers.  I would welcome some form of regulation to make it more difficult for abusers to abuse and abusees to be abused.

I take on board your point and I know lots of people will agree with you.  But in my experience, they usually change their mind when they have a 13 year old daughter duped into sending naked selfies to a paedophile and then get told that the company holding the data that might identify the paedo won't or can't share the data because of a lack of verification process or regulation.

One of the problems is that the internet companies are governed by the laws of the country in which they are based.  So US companies do things differently to Canadian companies and Australian and UK.  I am tending to think that there should be some sort of global internet laws, or at least an international code of ethics.
