Just spent the second day of our well-deserved and long-awaited holiday on a beach in Cyprus. The sunbeds to the right were taken up by a Russian family, the ones to the left by a family from the Black Country. In both cases, the adults were far louder and more annoying than their kids.

Tbf, if they were from the Black Country, they'd only have to open their mouths to be annoying.

Slightly related. I was talking to a couple with a toddler from Leeds on the plane last night . I asked them why they flew from Birmingham and they told me it was because it was there little girls birthday today and if they had flown from Doncaster the flight landed after midnight and they would have had to pay £300 for her to go. Our flight to Birmingham was scheduled to land at ten to twelve (it was delayed) so she could go for free.

In the grand scheme of things, two weeks off school isn't going to damage any kid's education.

There should only be fine if the holidays cause absence for compulsory exams.

I think everyone should get the option to take their children out of school for 10 days from year 1-10. I think year 11 is best if no longer than 5 days due to the impact on their GCSEs. This would at least offset the stupid prices you get in the summer and give families struggling a better chance of an affordable holiday. The price for a family of 4 to even a simple place like Spain or Greece in July/August is silly when you compare the same prices in May/June.

My wife is a teacher so we have no choice but to go on holiday during official school holidays (and pay a hefty premium for the privilege)

I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable taking the kids out during term time even if we could. The sad thing is I'm quite proud of both their attendance records but it means nothing in terms of whether they pass the 11+ around here or not.

I know loads of parents at our school who've taken their kids out and none of them to my knowledge have had any come back or fines.

I don't like the idea of kids missing any of the curriculum by taking holidays in term time. I get the idea of them having a 'life experience' or 'broadening their minds' etc. but the reality is they'll probably just be on a beach or in a swimming pool so that's a BS excuse really.

What about when schools close for teacher days and weather etc. You hear of schools just closing without any notice to fix a leaky roof and the parents are expected to be able to take time off work to cover this

We get at least six months notice for teacher training/INSET days and these are always on a Monday bolted on to the end of a half term.

The only time in the last 6 years that my kids primary school has closed without notice is due to snow days - three times in 6 years I think. Even then, we got notice the evening before by text/e-mail and the snow was so bad in our village that no-one could get out to work anyway.

Snow days are brilliant anyway, you take the day off with your kids and it’s snowing. Best days ever.

Well, yes?

I don't get why people seem to treat schools as some kind of creche. They're your responsibility and if the educational establishment is closed for health and safety reasons (and they don't close schools lightly) then you'll have to make an arrangement. As mentioned inset days are announced well in advance, but they can't help the weather.

The same parents moaning about schools being closed would be the first to be onto InjuryLawyers4U if their little darling slipped over and hurt themselves in the school grounds. Also it's worth remembering some schools are closed in snowy weather because the bus companies refuse to run in those conditions, so there's nothing they can do.

Schools are there to educate children, not look after them.

I understand the cost arguement but as if some people are using the greater life experience / learning more than they would in school line.

If the kid is doing a bit of travelling and seeing the world then fair enough but if its their 4th time in Benidorm going down a water slide and playing some table tennis with other british kids for 2 weeks then the kid isnt really learning more are they?

At primary school the last few weeks the kids don’t engage in any learning anyway. It’s the case at most secondary schools too.

True, maybe not as much as during the year but its not like they are learning more splashing water at little 7 year old Tracy from Rochdale in a Costa del sol swimming pool.

Like I said, I've no issue with people saying it is to save money and doing it for that reason. However its the holier than thou claim from some opinion pieces that a kid will learn more from a typical Benidorm trip than in school. Obviously if the kid is experiencing more than the above on hols, then fair enough.
