Dahnsouff Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 This may not need a thread (but think it might) Why do people offer some players more slack than others, for example Vardy, been poor recently, Maddison also a bit below par but these two are largely untouchable (less so Maddison) Yet say Ghezzal did ok, arguably better than Maddison, and soon as he come on, BOOOO. And i I am sorry, but I have NEVER heard a more pathetic, needy excuse as "I am boo-ing Puel", all the boo-er’s are actually doing is dragging the WHOLE team down.
cal21212121 Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 I don't think the booing was for Ghezzal. I was personally annoyed that Maddison was coming off but Gray stayed on. Just about every game where we've been behind chasing a goal Puel has taken Maddison off despite being our only creative spark and it may have been once too many today for some fans
UniFox21 Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 The booing was ridiculous and honestly one of the most embarrassing experiences I've had as a city fan. How can we expect our players to play freely and with confidence, when boos are launched round the ground when they come on? Very few of that team can say they've been playing well consistently.

The booing was a total shambles. Seems being a supporter doesn't require supporting any more. Thought Ghezzal did well when he came on too, much more effective than Madders, but he's English, young and has a haircut so is immune from the criticism that some of the ??s that were in my proximity again today.

Ghezzal was good, had some moments of class pushed with moments of poor quality. He's got talent, it's a case of unlocking it for me.

Think you're right in what you say. Maddison was poor in the first half for me though slightly better than Gray. Barnes stole the show out of those three. Puel alluded to some of his forward players not doing their defensive duties and Maddison was certainly one of those! Ghezzal for me did well. More direct, more industrious and more accurate. He made more impression for me than Maddison and I feel very sorry for him because even if he was to think that fans aren't booing him directly, it does show that their not behind the decision to bring him on. Personally, I'd start with Ghezzal in the 10 position with Maddison on the bench despite him being a fans and media favourite which I feel is colouring judgement on his recent poor performances.

We needed to push up more towards the end of the game, to me it looks like it's easy to pass around Maddison. It made me laugh the exact moment before he came off he actually put proper pressure on the defender for the first time in the match, as he knew his number was up.
whoareyaaa Posted 4 February 2019 Posted 4 February 2019 Genuine question, did the fan base boo any of Pearsons subs because I can't remember it ever happening?

There was discontent when he brought Lawrence on instead of Nugent in one game during our awful run of not winning games in the prem. Don’t think anyone booed though I just remember the crowd going silent.
Babylon Posted 4 February 2019 Posted 4 February 2019 I'm not having that some of that booing wasn't also related to the player that was coming on. He did some really bright stuff when he came on and didn't look out of place in our team at all, yet he made one mistake where he turned back into trouble when he should have passed it and the knives were out. "Competition winner", "F***** S***", "Bring back Mahrez", "get him off" all spouted around me after that.

I'm think we did; though it may have been directed more at the player than the manager. I remember Gallagher getting booed; the goalkeeper Ricardo and a left back called Ryan McGiven (think that was his name) also being booed. They may not have all been under Pearson (or even substitutions), but we've always had an entitled, stroppy element in our crowd who'd rather hinder than help the team.

I know he's frustrating, but for me he has that same quality that Mahrez had (to a lesser extent) for us where he can be absent all game but just pop up and create a goal. There was a moment when Barnes took it around his man and played the ball into Shinji on the edge of the box and wanted the return ball, if Shinji got the pass right Barnes would have been through on goal, but Shinji fluffed it and I just wished it had been Maddison instead.

That said he puts in more good work then he does bad. Yet say Ghezzal did ok, arguably better than Maddison, and soon as he come on, BOOOO. - 1, Better then Maddison? No, 2, Booing? That I interpreted as the decision, Maddison whilst not his best game was still offering something in that game but he was hauled off. Performances need to improve.. that's one way to stop the booing.

Both became the object of a perverted, disgusting way for some to vent their anger or frustration out. Don't even try to handwave it with the usual and miserable excuse "they were booing the manager's decision" which is the same anyway. Maddison had a knock and faded away, it made sense to sub him off and Ghezzal did relatively well. Aside from the counter-productive effect it has on the whole team, many posters have confirmed the groans and moans in the crowd as soon as they knew said players were coming on, not counting the abuse when they made a mistake. It's shameful and uncalled for by all accounts.

It's shameful and uncalled for by all accounts. That's your opinion and you're welcome to it. I personally didn't boo but was still annoyed by the decision, I had no issues with Ghezzal coming on, I just felt it should have been for Gray as he was atrocious. And I do agree that booing doesn't help the team, but I'm also not going to criticise anyone who chooses to express their feelings through that medium.
fazzyfox Posted 5 February 2019 Posted 5 February 2019 The audible response to the substitution around where I sat was as follows:- We see the activity around the touch line, "ooh there's going to be a substitution" (that reads a bit camp, but it was words to that effect), nudging and pointing etc but can't make out who's coming on or off yet. Board goes up and you see number ten, it's a genuine shock, there's a mixture of gasps, "Whaaaattttt !" and "Noo !". Those natural reactions are followed for some with boo's before the change has taken place, seemingly directed at the decision and Puel. This always seems to give the departing player license to milk his disapointment which I think happened a bit here (playing to the crowd) but he could genuinely be surprised to go off ahead of Gray. The players and media obviously felt this brief change of atmosphere such was the volume of noise. Then the realisation that it is going to happen so it's time to applaud Maddisons efforts - strong applause. Then the applause for the incoming player which seemed muted compared to the Maddison applause. If at this stage there was booing then that's aimed at Ghezzal and is pointless. Ghezall other than one run into trouble had a strong composed game, surprisingly good and was not responsible for the defeat. At the final whistle there's a brief limbo period of disapointment where we take in the fact that we were a Ricardo brain freeze away from drawing with a confident side on umpteen times our budget who had resorted to time wasting and keeping the ball out of play (Ashley Young in particular) and as the players come over there's strong applause for their efforts. It's a mixture of instinctive reaction and a chosen follow up to the initial reaction. For the Southampton game I ranted about the line up but once it kicked off was 100% behind the team. But if you'd seen me in the pub when the line up (3 defensive midfielders) came on screen you'd have witnessed a genuine reaction to the managers decision making. If you'd seen me half an hour later you still would - it did go on a bit!
