Leicester City To Introduce Reusable Pint Cups At King Power Stadium

https://www.lcfc.com/news/1474985/leicester-city-to-introduce-reusable-pint-cups-at-king-power-stadium

In a bid to reduce single-use plastics, Leicester City Football Club will be introducing reusable pint cups at King Power Stadium on home matchdays.
- Leicester City aiming to reduce the amount of single-use plastics
- Reusable pint cups to be used on concourses at King Power Stadium
- Designated recycling bins will be located for fans to dispose of their cups
- Initiative to be launched at the Arsenal game on Saturday 9 November

The cups will be used on all concourse areas, with designated recycle bins located around King Power Stadium for supporters to dispose of their cups so that they can be washed after each match and recirculated.

In total, the Club will receive 10,000 reusable pint cups, which will be used for the first time when the Foxes take on Arsenal on Saturday 9 November.

It is estimated that the move will prevent 3.2 tonnes of plastic from polluting the environment during the 2019/20 season.

The Football Club have made a number of changes with regards to single-use plastics since the start of the 2018/19 campaign, with sauce sachets on concourses replaced by bottles, all plastic straws removed from circulation, plastic forks and knives replaces by wooden sporks and plastic stirrers replaced by wooden ones.

Furthermore, clap banners are 100 per cent recyclable and made from recyclable materials, the Foxes Fanstore at King Power Stadium have introduced brown paper bags in store to replace all plastic ones, while the Club’s kit manufacturer adidas are producing replica shirts made from 100 per cent recyclable polyester.

Leicester City in the Community have been involved in the Sky Ocean Rescue campaign since the start of 2017, with coaches visiting primary schools across the county to educate children about the issues affecting ocean health, to help find innovative solutions to the problem of ocean plastics and to inspire people to make small everyday changes that collectively make a huge difference.

It's a decent idea, but I assume all the beer will still come in bottles and then be poured out, rather than all being on tap?

It's a start, but there are a fair few other things we could be doing.

Good start. Making clappers collection only rather than put out on all seats (which the club have said they were going to do previously), would reduce massive amounts of waste too.

Would it? Surely they'd still produce 32,000 clappers, so unless they made them general rather than game specific it would be the same issues?

Yeah they'd probably still make the same amount to begin with, but once demand is figured out then the amount produced can be reduced. I'd wager at least half aren't used at all, and less than 10% make it to be recycled.

Make the clappers generic, not game specific, and any left over can be used in the next match. Wider point is, don't need to be be producing individual designs for each game. Personally, I don't really care what Tielemans favourite food is.

All good. Could be looking at recyled rubber tyres for items of clothing too.

I agree. Sure they could do more but then so could I. It's a good start.

If we can use this as an excuse to get rid of the clappers it would be good.

I don’t get the hatred towards them but each to their own but It’s quite clear from that statement clap banners won’t be removed anytime soon

"Each to their own" exactly, make them optional and then the people that want them can have them and those that aren't wanted aren't wasted.

On the subject of clappers. As discussed before they aren't going anywhere soon, but @Sol thewall Bamba is correct, they really should be collection points for them. They could soon work out the demand for them.

I never use mine but my boy loves it and always takes 1 home to keep. My house is full of the ****ing things. He likes the fact they are different each game and I guess that's part of the appeal off them for the younger fans.

On the subject of the cups. We are still assuming that most football going adults will actually make sure the cups go in the correct bin. I'm gonna wager they don't they go in the nearest bin or the floor unfortunately.

I've seen an article on Cheltenham racecourse where you have to pay a deposit for the the cup and then return it at the end of the day. However it's not been overly successful as you can only return about 4 cups per person, meaning it's a pain for groups. You also can't return to the bar only collection points on the way out, meaning large queues.

So yet again having probably spent £5 per pint and had several pints during the day people just write off the money and chuck them.

What this country needs is a culture change. Maybe the club could issue cups to all season ticket holders at the start if the season that you take with you each game and get a discount on the price of a drink. If you forget or don't bother you pay a premium.

Unlikely I know. But I think people are becoming more aware of the cost to the environment of all the plastic we use.

Also for every good initiative we also have steps backwards. Once upon a time a programme turned up as it was intended. I haven't brought one for a while but unless I'm wrong they now turn up in a plastic cover.

Would be interesting to know if the club employ or consult with environmental specialists on a regular basis.

I believe this season with the change in size the plastic bag as been dropped.

You can’t knock them for doing something.

there’s also a lot of paper waste that comes from a match day... I just don’t know what can be done about it?

Clappers - Agreed. All I do is put mine under the seat and leave it there evry game. How about the suggestion of a collection in each entrance/turnstile (or similar). Any that are left after a match, get them in the club shop and sell them for 50p with all proceeds going to the VS foundation.

Plastic cups - it's baffling how complicated it is in this country. Places like Germany and probably most of Europe have had this system for ages and it works perfectly. Every drink costs an extra £1 for the use of the cup, they can be returned to bars and therefore the £1 cost is taken off the next drink (essentially only actually paying for the drink not the cup). There's no separate place to take your empty cups and then queue again to be served, all happens in one transaction. This is also at European festivals whereas the UK has been living in the stone ages on this matter. Ridiculous it has taken this long for any movement. Fully agree on the culture change.

Not match day related but the thick printed cardboard insert that comes along with each ticket purchase in the post, are these recyclable too?

It's a nice touch but it seems a waste to me, every ticket I've received since the first game of the season has come with one and it's served no purpose, it's gone straight in the bin after I've taken my ticket out the envelope.

I'm sure there must be 1000's of other members that are doing the same like myself. When you look at that amount and stretch it over the season for each ticket that is posted out i'm sure it'd add up to a considerable amount.

I print my tickets when I can but it's not always an option so unfortunately this can't always be avoided.

Ha ha good point... the ridiculousness of pouring out a plastic bottle into a plastic cup and then proclaiming we're trying to do our bit for the environment. Just give us the plastic bottle you morons.
