st albans fox Posted 16 November 2022 Posted 16 November 2022 There is a lot of politics and some religious intolerance in the arguments for/against Qatar from a purely sporting angle, any country who wants to host the mens World Cup should be in a position to host the womens. If they are not then they aren’t suitable - end of.
LVFox Posted 16 November 2022 Posted 16 November 2022 Nerdy post here, but if anyone’s after a decent wallchart, the one in FourFourTwo is a beauty.

So as I think it was obscene to hold it in Russia I'm allowed to think it's obscene to hold it in Qatar? But if I didn't I wouldn't be?

I’m not comparing the value of lives. It’s a shame that any one loses their life at a place of work. Obviously I’m comparing the amount of deaths, the numbers simply can’t be ignored. Russia has shown that it was a farce of a World Cup too. 1

The 6500 comes from Amnesty International an organization that relies on private funding to survive so it is in their interest to promote the highest number possible, wip up a frenzy and benefit by increased funding. The figure apparently comes from information obtained from the embassies in Qatar representing the 'guest workers" as they are called of the number of citizens from each of the main countries of workers who died in Qatar between 2012 and 2019. The information does not contain the cause of death. there are over 1.7 million guest workers in Qatar. The government information ... well let me just say i take anything the Qatari government says with a pinch of salt and i work for the Qatari government. From my observations safety standards on construction sites are quite high with all workers wearing the correct safety equipment including harnesses when at heights. The construction sites all have safety boards that display the number of safety man hours achieved. There are incidents no doubt and i heard of one recently where a gantry collapsed killing two workers. More incidents for guest workers occur around the conditions in which they live. Most stay in labour camps an hour or two from the centre of doha with multiple workers per room. The employer is responsible for providing accommodation, food and transport along with a ticket home every two years. There are quite a lot disputes on unpaid wages and these are dealt with by the ministry of labour or the law courts but settlement can take quite a while and there is no social support system in the country. Holding an employees passport is illegal and the system of having to obtain employer approval to leave the country has been scrapped. There are still restrictions on what some guest workers can do and they need a no objection certificate from their employer to get a drivers licence to bring their family to Qatar to live (a minimum salary requirement is need) or to drink alcohol if they are a non-muslim. Some malls don't let quest workers in on a friday (weekend) but that is there decision. Other than that they are free to go and do as they like. With respect to gay and lesbian rights yes these practices are illegal but they go on .. just check out locanto qatar personals. There is also a high number of Pilipino effeminate men who reside in the country (you can tell from their look and behavior). With respect to women's rights well my wife as lived here 6 years to and felt no discrimination. Local women can drive, can go out without male chaperone and increasing can marry for love rather than arrangement. There are a few well know bars and cafes where locals go to meet the opposite sex. With respect to one person on this forum saying Qatar cannot host the women's world cup. Well since i have been here they have held the women's world gymnastics finals. the world athletics finals with ladies in very brief briefs (i should know i went every day) the FINA world short course championships (Men and Women) various road running races (men and women) and triathlons (men and women) should i go on? Finally for the guy who says Qatar is in the medieval ages ... grow a brain! BTW i an not a Qatari I am Australian. I am not defending Qatar as the country is far from perfect (hell my country used to stick immigrants in a prison on a remote Island and forget about them) but just telling how i see it. Let me try leading you by the hand on this one as you appear to be struggling: What would you call carrying out kill operations in overseas territories, using radioactive substances to facilitate executions of those opposed to the state, and conducting an illegal bombing and invasion of a neighbouring sovereign country that involves substantiated war crimes?
