The OH Leuven Thread 2020/21

Been explained before. There's still roughly 3 months to play this season and because of the very hectic January schedule, the team had pretty much zero tactical and game approach training, which in turn makes it a lot harder for the new signings to integrate into the squad.

So when is there going to be the opportunity to integrate them?

If that were the case, he wouldn't be playing Sowah though. Who, despite his poor run of form in January, was still one of the first names in the lineup. :)

Brys is known for rotating very little and sticking with his first eleven whenever possible. He was the same at his previous clubs. I think that's really all there is to it.

Sowah has grown with you over the last 2.5 seasons though, he's more your player than ours bar the small matter of ownership.

I get the impression, as an uninformed observer, that Mark Brys doesn't want the Leicester players he's been given. As if he's saying "I pick the team, I didn't ask for these players, so I'm not playing them". Which is fair enough, a manager has got to manage.

I don't think we can read too much into Benkovic's non appearance. This'll be the 3rd club in a row he's barely touched the ball for.

There are indeed some rumours that our manager isn't really pleased with the signings of King and Benkovic. It seems our Director of Football signed them without talking to our manager. This might be the reason why he refuses to play them. I have to say these are just rumours and I don't know if they are true or not.

The month of January has been very busy. We had to play 2 games per week, which also influenced the training schedule. The coaches mainly focussed on recovery and injury-prevention instead of tactics. This makes it very difficult for the new guys to get acquainted with our style of play. Even Siebe Schrijvers, who we signed for 2 million € ( a club record), has had a difficult start. The schedule has returned to normal now (1 game per week) so the team can get back to their normal training routine. I still believe both Benkovic and King will get some playing time.

According to the highlights of the friendly Benkovic was subbed of during the second half. This might mean he could be at least be on the bench this Friday, especially because one of our CB's (Jemelka) got injured last game.

Who is your director of football? Is he linked to us?

Never a good sign if the manager and dof aren’t synced. Usually the manager doesn’t last long but seeing as he’s just signed a new deal it could be quite the issue

Our DOF is Wim De Corte. He has been with us since 2016, so he was already here when King Power took over (2017)

What does this mean for OHL in practical terms? How is the debt managed?

The "bad numbers" for OHL are due to the many investments King Powers has done to the stadium, practice facility, youth center,...

While we don't have any financial troubles, the club is working hard to find new sponsors so we can be self-sufficient in the next couple of years.

Sounds very much like how Leicester has been run. Heavy investment to get up to a good competitive level and then slow sustained self sufficient growth with investment when needed. Both OHL and Leicester really did hit the jackpot with King Power.

Club ‘aware of potential problem’ set to be caused by Leicester City – Working to ‘find a solution’

Leicester City are owned by the King Power International Group and the Bangkok based organisation purchased Belgian side Oud-Heverlee Leuven in May 2017.

OH Leuven were struggling financially in the second tier of Belgian football when the Foxes’ owner took charge of the club.

They were promoted to the Jupiler Pro League this season and have enjoyed a good run under Marc Brys’s guidance in the ongoing campaign.

OH Leuven are ninth in the table with 37 points, two points behind fifth placed KV Oostende and four behind Anderlecht, who are in fourth spot.

They are in contention to qualify for next season’s Europa League play-offs, but could be forced to miss out on the competition.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, OH Leuven ‘cannot play European football’ next season if Brendan Rodgers’ side qualify for either the Europa League or the Champions League.

Both the clubs are owned by the King Power International Group and the newspaper states UEFA doesn’t allow them ‘both to play European football’.

The potential problem set to be caused by Leicester is also confirmed by OH Leuven, but they haven’t given up yet.

“We are aware of a potential problem. But we will find a solution in due time,” Het Nieuwsblad quoted OH Leuven as saying.

Didn't both the Red Bull owned teams, Leipzig and Salzburg both play in Europe, last season or the season before? I thought they drew each other, or very neary ended up playing each other.

Yeah but they had to make massive changes in how the clubs were ran, couldn't have people involved with both clubs etc.

So work is going to have to be done to "seperate" the two clubs if Leuven do qualify for Europe

The thing is Leuven really ought to want King Power to still own them somehow as they are the best owners in the world let's be honest. However with ambition and the fact that pretty much anything KP touch turns to gold means they will be in Europe and probably win a few things so maybe Top's brother has to go it alone.

Fair enough. Be interesting to what we do, hopefully for Leuvens sake we getting sort, don't want to stop the club growing.

I think the issue with that will be that Tops brother is still part of King Power. With the 2 Red Bulls teams, RB owns Leipzig, where as they are only a title sponsor for Salzburg, and as below, they ended up having to reduce financial commitments to Salzburg to be eligible

"Red Bull also reviewed and reduced the scope of its financial commitment to the Austrian club. The company is expected to announce an extended sponsorship deal — lasting until 2022 — on reduced terms in the coming days, a move that it successfully argued would diminish its influence over the team’s activities"

Certainly if this scenario does come into play, it is going to be very interesting to see what route they take to ensure both clubs can compete

Tonight 9th placed OH Leuven face 13th placed Kortrijk, where 3 points would move OH Leuven up to 5th in the table.

Kortrijk have won 2 of their last 5 games, with a 1-1 draw and eventual loss on penalties at home to Standard Liege in the cup last time out. Their last league fixture was a 3-0 away win at Mouscron. Their best player this season has been Ilombe Mboyo, who has 9 goals and 6 assists in the league.

Last time these 2 teams met was back in December, where Leuven ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a hat trick from Henry.

Leicester Loanees: Kamal Sowah starts, Josh Eppiah on the bench, Filip Benkovic not in the squad - Andy King is also not in the squad
