The OH Leuven Thread 2020/21

Romo made a few decent saves there but he can't be beaten at his near post for the free kick. Looked a backs against the wall second half, much like Everton last night

Serious belter though, also went in off the post I believe. Very, very hard to catch that one.

Agreed on the backs against the wall part, Mercier's injury really handicapped us as we're a much poorer side without him. That said, we had one or two moments where we could still have finished it off, with Schrijvers' one on one being the biggest one. But still, good point all things considered.

How is Benkovic not starting?

According to an couple of articles in the media Benkovic still needs time to get used to our style of play and to his teammates.

Because of the busy schedule ( 2 games a week) the coaching staff mainly focuses on recuperation and injury prevention instead of tactics. This makes it difficult for the new players to get used to the team and style of play.

One article stated that Benkovic hasn't really impressed during training. Especially his passing and communication need to improve. It also seems that his self-confidence took a bit of a knock during his failed loan spells with Bristol City and Cardiff.

The lad just needs some time. He'll be ok.

I originally posted in another thread, but looks like under the new rules, Kamal Sowah will be eligible for a work permit at the end of this season

https://www.thefa.com/news/2020/dec/01/gbe-points-based-system-launched-011220

Page 11 - Criteria (Sowah will not be eligible based on International Appearances, but will be able to accumulate enough points based on the criteria set out by Paragraph 25)

Paragraph 24. The FA will grant a GBE if the Player’s International Appearances meet the Auto Pass Percentage set out in Table 1 of the criteria.

Paragraph 25. If a Player is not granted a GBE in accordance with paragraph 24 above, The FA will grant a GBE if a Player achieves 15 or more points in accordance with paragraphs 31-39.

Paragraph 32 - Belgian League is Band 2, 10 points granted if he continues to play every game for Leuven

Paragraph 38 - 10 points granted - Sowah has played in the Belgian domestic cup this season

From these 2 criteria Kamal Sowah will have 20 points, and therefore be eligible for a Governing Body Endorsement

.....I remember the last time I saw Benkovic play was in an U23 game where he looked like he was playing on his own!!!

He was very quiet, pensive, played at half pace and seemed to be not a part of the team. He has been out on loans and we appear to be getting the same feedback that he has failed to impress and not warrant a place in the team. Is it a personality problem where he is overpowered by more extrovert players and he becomes a wallflower, taking a back seat and struggling to come across to his teammates.

I am aware you can be too much in your own head and that leads to insecurity, worrying about what others think instead of the positives he can bring to the table. If you are that self-conscious then you are going to struggle to be noticed and as football is a dog eat dog profession he has got to put himself to the front and force the manager to notice him. I have seen the Youtube reel and he looks a very good defender and if it is not down to injuries then he is selling himself short and it is about time he steps up.

Tonight 7th placed OH Leuven face 9th placed Beerschot, where 3 points would move OH Leuven up to 4th in the table.

Charleroi have won 1 of their last 5 games (3-0 away at Zulte Waregem), with a 0-0 draw at home to Kortrijk last time out. Their best player this season has been Raphael Holzhauser, who has 11 goals and 12 assists from attacking mid this season

Last time these 2 teams met, Beerschot won 4-2 on 31st October, with Leuvens goals coming from Mercier and a Henry penalty.

Leicester Loanees: Kamal Sowah starts, Filip Benkovic and Josh Eppiah on the bench - Andy King not in the squad
