US Presidential Election 2020

The way the authorities are dealing with this in the US is excellent so far. Straight in there, attempting to nip it in the bud. The consequences are showing any wannabe far right extremist, such actions will not be tolerated.

They need to be careful though, too heavy handed and you just silo such people, not remove the problem.

I don’t think it makes a difference. Most far right thinkers are coward, people who love someone to blame. Just look at some of them here. They truly have a victim complex. Whether they’re forgotten and left or dealt with a heavy hand, they need someone to blame.

For me this decisive action ensures the message is out that hatred in the form of violence will never be tolerated. I mean, the guy in that video actually blames the airline despite the fact a few days earlier he was at a US Govt building with a group carrying guns and bombs - like that’s a normal way to spend a weekday.

Meeting cowardice with severe punishment and restricts the aggressive attacks. My thinking anyway. Let them hate in some corner but just don’t get the rest of us involved.

Well, I say that. Your visibility’s down somewhat, now that you’ve been booted off just about every form of social media going. Even Pinterest! What was your mood board on there? Recipes for covfefe, hamberders and white (power) Russians? It’s going to be interesting, watching you try to organise your next armed insurrection through Tinder. Swipe far right, kids, and try not to be disappointed when he turns up and is at least a hundred and fifty pounds heavier than he’s claiming to be.

So it ends. “There will be a peaceful transition of power”, mumbles the naked emperor from his embarrassed little podium, as the cattle prods to keep him on script hover just out of shot.

Congratulations, Donnie. You overplayed your tiny hand and will now forever be defined by this absurd moment. The party of law and order incited a violent coup d’twats, riling up a mob of domestic terrorists and seditionists who barged into the Capitol building and murdered a cop in the process. And they did it waving Blue Lives Matter flags. This is the culmination of four years’ worth of nationalism, entitlement, narcissism and mindless partisanship. People got themselves killed in the name of a duplicitous, criminal idiot who despises them.

It was utter lunacy, but the embarrassing incompetence of your naked grab at power shouldn’t dilute how horrifyingly dangerous it was. This wasn’t some grumbly protest that got a little out of hand, regardless of what that haunted ventriloquist’s dummy Tucker Carlson insists to the contrary. Military veterans entered Congress with zip ties looking to take hostages, chanting ‘Hang Mike Pence!’ and thirsting for violence. This was a mob genuinely convinced that their own government are child-torturing traitors and communists. Had they got their hands on Pelosi or AOC, it wouldn’t have ended in hair braiding and a ****ing drum circle. The only reason it didn’t work is that their dear leader handled his attempted overthrow of the government just as incompetently as he’s handled everything else.

If Joe Biden thinks he can reach across the aisle after all this, he’s been sniffing the wrong hair. The GOP and their financial backers have spent years flirting with hate in order to fund and facilitate their agenda, and now they’re feigning horror that hate has become what defines them. Cowards like Mulvaney, Devos and Chao aren’t doing the noble thing by falling on their swords. They’re rats fleeing a sinking ship. Even now the falsehoods about a stolen election are still being parroted by your wannabe heirs like Gaetz and Josh Hawley, a man with a face as long as the prison sentence he deserves. As for Ted Cruz? Christ. You could beat his wife to death with a brick in front of him, and that spineless cuck would only apologise for getting daddy's brick dirty.

Biden’s inauguration is set to be an absolute shitshow, with further violence planned by a nationwide movement of domestic terrorists that you've spent years tacitly encouraging. Watching the very social media companies who enabled your rise to power now rush to condemn you is nauseating, although there’s some pleasure to be had in it. Watching right-wingers protest the free market's decision that Donald Trump is no longer profitable when its autonomy is meant to be everything conservatives stand for is an irony so fabulously delicious that it's probably too gay for a Christian bakery to put on a cake.

This horror show should be the inflection point that leads to the collapse of the Republican party for a generation, but we shouldn’t hold our breath for that outcome becoming the reality. The GOP have learned that all it takes to hold on to its seats is complete and shameless dishonesty, enabled by a rightwing media oligarchy who paint anyone to the left of Reagan as communist maniacs. It’s a toxic playbook that will define politics everywhere for years to come unless Democrats find their spines and tear it out by the root. The ‘we have to listen to both sides!’ rhetoric is a Trojan horse for a tantrumming cabal of crybaby little bitches, incapable of entertaining the prospect that their favourite despot tanked his own re-election.

And that’s the real horrifying truth here; that if you’d just kept your moronic mouth shut, Donald Trump, none of this would ever have happened. If you hadn’t persuaded some of your own base away from the polls, if you hadn’t been so mindlessly crude and corrupt that it so energised the Democrats, you probably would have been re-elected. It’s rare that an American incumbent fails to get their second term. Nearly four hundred thousand Americans have died in this pandemic as a direct result of your incompetence, and you still got over 74 million votes. Republicans performed reasonably strongly down the ballot, meaning that it wasn’t the outright plutocracy and cruelty of your policies that turned people off, but the man at the helm of the party. That you can’t recognise that - when even now, you’re still convinced that the Democrats for some reason mobilised a national effort and conspired to fraudulently squeak control of the Senate by the slimmest possible margin - is proof of one thing and one thing only; just how pathologically ****ing stupid and deluded you are.

And a stupid, frightened animal is at its most dangerous when backed into a corner. There’s some sliver of hope to be had as a result of Wednesday’s madness - it’s surely destroyed Ivanka and Junior’s hopes for a future in politics. And the idea of Eric’s little heart sinking on his birthday, watching the man who’s never told him he loves him say it to his cult of worshippers, is inherently hilarious. But that doesn’t change the fact that the nuclear football needs to be wrestled off you before you can do any more damage.

It’s a fitting treason finale to the end of the most-watched show in American history; a House of Cards for the Twitter generation, helmed by just another sad little sex offender who deserves to never work again.

I see you, Donald Trump."

All well and good, but...
The REPUBLICANS are the PROBLEM.
The conservatives KNEW what Trump was going to do
The right wingers HELPED his criminal acts
THE GOP supported his lies
The REPUBLICANS cheered his insurrection.

Trump is a piece of shit... The conservative right wing idiots around the world are the shit factory

And, of course, they believe they have God on their side.

And there it is. The victim mentality. "Look at what they're doing to us" said man who's learning the hard way that HIS actions have consequences.

It's been a joy to see conservatives learn about the free market this week.

If they keep this inside of DC and what happens there everything should be OK. However if the Government uses this event to pass a Patriot Act 3.0 and double down on freedom of speech including editing the internet for contrary points of view then you will see things get much darker than they are now. Using this event as a "9/11" to cover up for the catastrophe that is Covid is not a good idea. This is a bad mistake by the government.

If they're planning something similar I really hope there is a point on government property there is an army presence and if they pass point x they're fired on with deadly force. You can't dress up terrorism as anything else. It needs dealing with.

Now that would be a proper kickoff for Civil War 2.0.:)

Indeed.

The sad thing is that Turnberry (one of our best Open venues IMO) will probably never be awarded the Open again while Trump owns it.

He might not own it for long.:) One of my favorites.

This? Different world isn't it? Not as simple as it sounds.

I mean the Reconstruction Era in general. It succeeded in creating a Union that would endure, but it horribly failed from the point of view of what also needed to be done: destroying the ideal of white supremacism in a way that Germany (mostly) managed with Denazification some time later. In fact, it barely seemed to slow it down, if the accounts of what happened in the South afterwards are mostly accurate.

Goodness forbid things come to that again, but if they do I really hope the same mistake is not made twice.

Edit: perhaps "destroy" is the wrong word and "neutralise" is a better one - you're never going to stop people from thinking that kind of thought, but you can neutralise them in a way that means they never claim any significant political or other power anywhere again.

Never is a very long time and it seems people never have a difficult time finding a scapegoat to blame for whatever issue.

All I can do is take care of the square foot I occupy and what it touches in this life.  Wish I could make the bad go away but have the feeling that this is why we are here NOW. Every thing has to do the work.
