A sad indictment of the modern British football "fan".

England fans' behaviour 'excellent' at World Cup -

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c75ye7lz347o

I mean, what has it come to when both English and Scottish fans are described as "excellent" by the police.

I can only imagine that America is more violent than I imagined.

We had the misfortune of needing to visit ER/A&E whilst on a recent US holiday. After asking about symptoms and insurance, the next question was 'are you armed?'

I hope you answered that by saying that you have an above average number of arms.

I think the comments section on the BBC news site is the most miserable corner of the internet.

It's certainly up there, but I would offer up practically any thread on almost any social media site concerning anything vaguely controversial and the misery is self evident there, too.

True, bbc isn't really news anymore, superficial at best. You should check the comments section on articles on the FT, really good insight, often better than the article IMO!

As above try the FT, there is good insight in the comments

Some of the specific science related news sites have decent comment sections too - those that haven't been invaded by tinfoil hat fruitcakes, anyway.

Weird post. It could just be that those have gone over there have been slightly better behaved than our reputation might suggest. That said I don't recall much issue in Qatar 4 years ago either.

I would imagine given you're looking more at thousands rather than hundreds just to be there, that that probably changes the complexion of people over there somewhat in comparison to the typical European excursions.

Sat here cursing Tesco home delivery for being late with our weekly food shop. Kids going mental that there's nothing to eat, wife moaning etc, etc.

Then get a text from Tesco saying we've got until 11.30pm tonight to make any changes for delivery tomorrow.

Which is when I realised I must have originally booked the slot for tomorrow instead of today by mistake.

Yet another senior moment to add to the long list

We had a change of plan so last night the Mrs changed our scheduled delivery for this morning 8=9 to this evening 8-9. We were just about to go out this morning when we received a message saying it was on the way. She’d fell sleep on her phone before finishing. lol

George R R Martin is the most disappointing writer ever.

Not because he writes bad books, but because he doesn't finish them. He just took the HBO money, finished the TV series with a sloppy ending and blatantly can't be bothered now he's super famous and rich.

I've never read any their books but I think that's a common opinion about both George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss, once they got popular and made their money they seem to have disappeared and can't be arsed to finish their series anymore.

I do get that if you have a lengthy popular book series that people love, it must be quite difficult to finish as you're always going to disappoint some fans, and there's very few endings that havent been done and arent going to be called a derivative of something else at this point. But there's definitely a point where it feels like they've just taken the piss and run off and taken the money,

Always find it a bit strange how little Brits know or care about the foundation of America considering the founding fathers and a lot of what we think of as typically American ideas were basically British.

Very few Brits even know or care about the foundation of Ireland or Northern Ireland, I don't know why you'd expect them to care about America. Most people don't care about any history than WW2.

Some Brits do.

Unfortunately it's so often the historically sanitised version that both Americans and Brits hear about.

I would guess a lot of people from a lot of places have little interest or knowledge of history. Too many have the attitude before my time.

But we do, thanks to informative documentaries such as this...

They don't know about the foundation of Britain, or that the UK is different to Britain, or that there's been a Scottish king on the throne of England more recently than an English one, or indeed a Welsh one, or that the English aren't the original inhabitants of England.

So how can they know that people like Drake and Cromwell were oppressors of the Irish, or the significance of Croke Park in 1920 and the Easter Uprising, or that we had that coming?

I had to visit Ireland to find all this out. Each country tends to leave out the embarrassing bits.

I decided to learn about American Independence and the Civil War last year. Not particularly thrilling history but it gives a good background of all the European attempts at colonizing the land before it came to the US, the politics of the early colonies, and the histories of slavery and native exploitation.

I can guarantee that if Trump had been born in that era he would have been firmly a Confederate lobbying for slavery expansion and would be firmly against the influence of The Union government. The cowardly scumbag.
