Fair play to SA. A lot of people, myself included, questioned the validity of them being there given who they've played to get here but they've got the result. English conditions is a haven for fast bowlers.

South African hierarchy probably take credit when they've not exactly been cheerleaders for test cricket from what I've seen. This all started when they sent the reserves to New Zealand.

I do feel like it needs to be a final series rather than a one off test though.

Should be a knockout involving all 12 Test-playing nations. Four groups of three, maybe with group stages played in four top seeds' nations. County Championship bonus points used to help break ties.

Then, a finals tournament with group winners playing semis and a final. Bonus points again used to break ties in the event of draws.

Pitch should be even better to bat on tomorrow although some overnight rain may make it spicy.

It’s got me thinking about the ashes. The Aussie batting line up is clearly on the decline, but the bowling attack while also aging is incredibly sharp. On the other hand our batting line up is fantastic but the bowling on paper is a complete mess. I think a lot will depend on the pitches, weirdly the Aussies might want some bowler friendly wickets.

If you had to choose a difference now that would win the ashes you’d say Australia’s bowlers would be that. Bazball can be destructive positively or negatively for us. It goes one way or the other and after ten overs we could either be 80/0 or 28/5. One thing we do know for sure is that we can score runs.

With their consistently set bowling attack, that’s what holds the advantage for me at the moment. If we can go there with a fit Atkinson, Wood & Archer it will help us out no end.

Currently at Scotland v Netherlands, in Glasgow.  T20.

Scotland set Ned 160.

More importantly, we are actually getting some play under very heavy skies.

A very pleasant watch.

Going to be weird when we finally have a summer when Chris Woakes isn't involved.

Inexperienced bowling attack for England against and inexperienced India top order. A lot of people putting England as favourites but I think its pretty even.

Top order for England will need to show more consistency to win I think.

Good bowling attack v good batting lineup and shaky bowling attack v shaky batting lineup.

Think home advantage will tell for England, but the only guarantee I would think is that as long as every Test is more than three days long, there will be results.

You'd think at least one match wouldn't have enough play for that three days over the course of an English summer, yeah.

So 3-1 England or possibly 2-2.

I think England will win because our squad is so changed. As much as I was getting tired of Sharma in test cricket, there was that experience.

Same with Ashwin. He was a proven wicket-taker and carried years of experience.

Kohli is Kohli so is a big miss no matter the circumstance.

I've got faith any replacements will eventually come good but an England away tour, with natural swing and potentially overcast conditions any given day, it's a tough test for younger players.

I am looking forward to Gill as captain though. He's a player that seems beyond his years so hopefully he has a solid series.

Few tight tests but it'll be an England overall win I think.

Why did Stokes put them in? Didnt see the toss but surely with the overhead conditions you bat?

Could backfire but I think traditionally Headingly is a bowl first pitch. Probably best chance of getting any movement is early on first day and also gets the inexperienced India batters in straight away, hopefully anyway,

India all out by Tea or 300-3 at close lol

Yeah didn't go according to plan lol

I think part of bowling first is the lack of trust in the batting order, didn't want to be 3 down for nothing in the first hour of the series.

Which you’d say the batting is the stronger part of our game.

This has been ridiculously easy for India.
