It’s amazing how they’ve turned it around in a short time. They’re close to the all round team. Solid enough batters, fearsome fast bowlers for hard decks, nippy seamers for green tops and probably the best spin pair/trio in world cricket.

Good at golf and same agent as Stokes

Non ironically this. Nice to see Haines, Rew and Tribe get runs, all lads that thrived in the championship last year rather than playing golf.

Remember him in the England side being a consistent regular scoring impressively .

I find this news very sad, particularly given his age,  as someone who admired his brave performances against the best quick bowlers around = particularly the West Indian quickies.  Dropped from the England team too soon given his test average of 44

This is a good obituary:

Nothing on this on the six o’clock BBC news. I had to switch my location to cover Hampshire to get a BBC tribute!

Loved watching Robin Smith play growing up.

The good old days when test matches were on bbc!

Smith was a top top batsman and exciting to watch.

RIP

Alienating a fair few of the Hundred fans now with the IPL 2.0 branding. Now some of the Yorkshire lot and Durham fans know how we feel! All the better if it turns a few more away from the competition

Way to build brand loyalty, lads!

If only that could have been honest at the time that thos was their end game. The made-up reasons when they came up with it were so lacking in logic to anyone with a half a brain.

What about now?? :)

I'd say that Harry Brooke believes in his own hype. He needs a reset, lose the ego.

Bethel will, hopefully, kick on now......bet he can't wait for the summer.

The proof will be in whether he can do it consistently. The signs from how he played in Sydney are good but he needs to be playing for Warwickshire a lot more than he has been in order for that to happen.

It's only a few months ago he played that horror shot at The Oval, so he's still very much learning his trade. Time in the county game will help him to do that.

Fair play to him - but he struggles badly under pressure. Fine when the pressure is off as the final test was. That performance at the Oval for a bloke who considers him no.3 in the line-up was horrific - played like a tail ender.

We'll see things differently I think, sometimes its always about the context, I went to the last 4 tests.

I hope it really works for him.  Ollie Pope has played 64 tests for England and has an average of 34.5, nowhere near good enough, he can't be the answer going forward.

The 4 tests I saw all showed that the pressure on the middle order is because one of the openers is gone quickly, generally Duckett is gone in the blink of an eye, or Crawley has got 0.  So 3 and 4 were openers in reality, you're facing a new ball, the opening bowlers with their tail up.  These are test matches NOT T20.

There was not one commentator (both sides) out there that didn't not rate him, On Tailenders, Tuffers said he had scored the best 10 he had ever seen:D  He took 20 balls to go from 99 to 100, that shows an ability to deal with pressure (personal -  his 1st EVER 1st class ton) and they bought back Starc to him, we still had a chance of a draw or even a win as Broad on Channel 7 said 200+ could be a tough target.  We only lost by 5 wickets considering we were 200 behind on the first innings, when Brook & Smith again left 50+ runs in the shed through stupid dismissals.  There was plenty up for grabs in this test.  He then kicked on to 150+.

His 40 was a vital score in the carnage at the MCG.  Only Head, Brook & him score 40+ in that test.

I would suspect he would take whichever spot was offered, Root and Brook aren't giving up 4 and 5 though, so beggars can't be choosers.  Even the Aussies commentators said if he came into the Aussie team it would be at 5 or 6.  So for me plenty of extenuating circumstances, he's 22 and technically very accomplished, I'd give him a run.  The Oval was his 4th test. The top 3 have had their time and at least 2 should go.

Lets see.....OR we bring Pope back????
