Still remember the headline quote from McLintock in the Mercury - 'There is so much talent here' - before half the side were sold.  The folly of taking on a manager with no previous experience of the role.  Nightmare.

I was excited when he became manager but my dad said at tne time 'he walked out on us to further his career as a player, if he does well as manager he'll do the same'.

Well he certainly wasn't a success as a manger. I remember The Kop going crazy one week and bouncing around singing 'We've got a corner'. Truly awful times.

A truly abysmal season it was. Under 3 points for a win we'd have finished on 27pts and that was a 42 game season, not 38 like today.  They were one of the worst top flight teams of the last 50 years.  Possibly only the Derby side of 2006/07 were worse. Knocked out in the first round of both cups too.

 

Looking at the players in that photo, although there were a few who were decent servants of the club in their day, they were all gone within a year of Jock Wallace taking over, with the exception of Mark Wallington.

 

And don't get me started on the players who were signed during the season as the season disintegrated at the speed of light. The likes of Roger Davies, Billy Hughes and Lammie Robertson were not what was required at the time. McLintock signed all his old mates from London to give them a final pay day. Only Eddie Kelly was remotely decent.

 

Hilariously, Frank was sacked with a game to go when we were already down so he didn't even finish the debacle. And we won that game too. Beat Newcastle 3-0 at Filbert Street, the best result of the season by far and one which continued Newcastle's proud record of always losing to the worst sides. And they got relegated themselves the next year.

Always amuses me when these daft overly entitled ****ers that materialise on the matchday threads with their "get out of my club", "this is the worse performance in club history", "never want to see (insert here) in a city shirt again", "the players should have a long hard look in the mirror" "Rodgers out" bullshit - and I think about the Mclintock, Pleat and Hamilton eras. 

 

We are truly blessed in terms of players, coaching, manager and owner.

@davieG, I'm too young to know about this team but, comparably, were they worse than the 2001/02 team which I consider to be by far the worst top flight team in a generation?

 

The record, from four more games, is a point worse at three points per game than 2002. That team were down from the first game it seemed, when did this lot look nailed on for relegation?

It's the sort of memory one tries to forget but looking at the early results where we won 1 and drew 2 we then went on to lose the next 6 games from then on we were never out of the bottom 2 places, but I think my overriding memory apart from that was the awful signings he made he turned us into a virtual Donkey Sanctuary as @ceredigion points out above.

McLintock as Leicester City manager was a disaster of that there is no doubt. Such a shame after having a good playing career with us.

 

One thing for sure; he didn't get his MBE for football managerial services!!

Excuse me Sir, I think the Grammar Police would like to ask you a few questions.

 

''Possibly only the Derby side were worse'' doesn't mean that there is a possibility that they were better. If it meant that, the word ''only'' would not be in the sentence. It means there is a possibility that they were the only team worse than us from 77/78. In other words, the worst top flight team was Derby of 06/07 and then there's close competition as to who is the 2nd worst and our 77/78 team is one of the contenders.

 

Amongst those contenders I would include Stoke City 84/85, Swindon 93/94, Burnley 09/10 and maybe even us again from 94/95. For a long while this season it looked like Sheffield United might make a bid for Derby's crown but they've shown a modicum of spirit lately.

 

For the record, in my opinion Derby County from 06/07 are the worst team ever to compete in the top flight, not just in the last fifty years but since the beginning of professional football, by a country mile. But if you were to ask me who's next I would have to say probably us from 77/78. If you're too young to remember it then thank your lucky stars.

Don't forget Alan Waddle and George Armstrong. Geoff Salmons wasn't bad - think he may have been our top scorer along with Tommy Williams?

Today happens to be 58 years exactly since my Dad took his 10 years old son down to Filbert Street (the Kop) to watch his first ever game. 2-2 v Tottenham Hotspur in front of a full house of just under 42000. I was hooked.

 

In my opinion 77/78 was by far the worst year I’ve ever experienced supporting City because we were so unbelievably poor. Because FM was such an abysmal and clueless manager, I believe the team basically gave up before Christmas. It certainly scarred a lot of supporters at the time because we went down without a fight. 
 

Obviously I’ve seen us relegated quite a few times, but at least on the other occasions we normally put up a fight. If Foxestalk had been around 43 years ago, it would have been in permanent melt down. Anybody under the age of 50 should count their blessings they didn’t have to endure such a gut wrenching season.

I think that famous incident was actually home to Cambridge Utd early in the next season (1978-79).

 

We were winning 1-0 near the end of the match.  He tripped over the ball in front of the Kop.  Oh how we laughed ... until Cambridge ran straight down the other end and equalised.

Look at those players..!!  No Way  should they  of finished with that season stat..

Mclintock..was my and many a City fans hero....Even Now I cant understand how he got

it so wrong ..

Actually, Newcastle got relegated with us (and West Ham).

 

Newcastle were as bad as us really, and only got the same number of points (22). 

 

They finished above us with a better goal difference. of -36 vs -44.   If only we could've won that last match 8-0 ......................

Yes I remember that game and that incident in it. I was watching the match from the Double Decker with my father and one of his friends and they remarked on how the Leicester dugout was packed with the manager, assistant manager, physio, PR man, social media moderators etc, whereas the Cambridge dugout just had one bloke in it, presumably the manager, who was stretching his legs out as if it was a lazy Sunday afternoon.
