You can spot Barnes in the background at 8:03 in to this video joking around with Matty Miles and Josh Knight.

Just as i thought......but its not Matty Miles, its elliot Percival (Barwell FC).   i think Matty Miles had already left the club at this point

Also at 4;50, you can see KDH with his hands in his pockets in between Max Bramley and Alex Pascanu...!

Ahh Pascanu… I was quite excited about him, and then he disappeared off to Romania

I think he is actually in Spain 2nd tier or something now and doing quite well

Just to say Saturday was probably one of the most enjoyable games for a long time for me.

We all get excited about our new signings from God knows where but it was absolutely brilliant to see players like Barnes and Hamza be the experienced ones and encouraging a 16 year old lad from Groby.

As I've said a few times, there's high hopes for the next lot coming through.

He’s not from our academy but saw Maddison do this a few times with younger lads, good to see and shows he cares etc!

I felt the same, was properly buzzing afterwards. They were a credit to the club.

There's so many more to come as well, long may it continue.

Yeah he did. He's from Coventry which will forever be held against him but he was excellent both as a player and a leader on Saturday.

How has he suddenly got quite physical in challenges and gained a yard of pace? Its remarkable to see, just hope he can keep dancing out of those crunching tackles and avoid injuries as they really stunt him. Right now he's one of the best players in the country.

Hes got his head right and is doing his hip pre-hab / re-hab properly.

Agree, he's playing with a proper swagger and maturity I've not seen before.

How crazy is that to think that Barnes would be playing against Porto in the Champions League the next season! Incredible!

On the same afternoon as the defeat to Chelsea, the first team were in action and picked up a 4-1 win against Watford in the FA Cup.

“It’s fantastic for the young players knowing that there’s a pathway if they are performing and producing the goods.

“They know that the manager (Brendan Rodgers) has the trust in them. We’re trying to mirror a lot of the things that the first team do for that reason. Hopefully that restores that confidence in them that we are doing things at Under-23 level, we’re trying to teach them the right way.

“And if they do get an opportunity, then the manager will put his trust in them and, on Saturday, the lads repaid that and did the business for him.”

I know the NHS in Leicester did a big recruitment drive in Portugal years ago and several 100 came over .

Not sure how big the Portuguese community was before that though. :dunno:

On the topic of this I’ve always wondered why we don’t see our diverse city reflected in the academy a bit more. I guess Choudhury and maybe Alex Pascanu too are more recent examples of that.

....I am sure some time ago we have had this discussion, as to why our academy do not feature players of a certain religion or race!!!

You do have Asian (Southern) players competing in grassroot football in great numbers but a career in football is for some not the way to go as a medical and professional pathway is uppermost. Not sure of how big the Portuguese or Greek population are in or city so unable to say if it is in anyway a reflection of what is going through our academy.

It does seem some ethnicity sees football as not where there future lies, and I am sure that the owners would like a few Thai or players from that area of the world finding a way into the team.

Stop playing 3-4-1-2 for a start Ben and 5ft 4 wingers up front.

.....I have not had the opportunity to see the U23s for some time now and if that was the formation chosen to be played in their last game, then you perhaps could understand, as a lot of their players were busy with the first team!!!

If that was the case, it would make sense that the U18s are also playing in the same fashion as the first team, which would mean players coming up an age group slots in as they would be comfortable, having previously played in that role. It makes little sense to only limit the mirroring of style of the first team, solely to the U23s.

They've played 3-4-1-2 since mid October and as a result moved Maswanhise from his best position who'd started the season brilliantly for us and then also seemed to drop Wakeling and play Maswanhise and Fitzhugh up front, both tiny wingers. We also had no left sided player available and were playing McAteer as LWB. Really odd.

Is it possible that players learn different skills from playing in different structures or formations. That Maswanhise playing in a more attacking role closer to goal might show him a different view/experience of the game.  Perhaps coaching in order to make him a better outside attacker and more adaptable to the different circumstances a manager would place on him.

To me, although winning is important, shouldn't the emphasis be placed on development?

Yes possibly, this sort of coaching tends to occur at earlier age groups in order to make them more comfortable with dynamic and modern football. Maybe there's some method in doing this at U23's too but my following of PL2 football and academy football, those teams that claim to mirror the first team tend to clearly show that in their style of play and often similar formation, that's not quite as evident at U23 level with us and it feels very much like we're waiting for a new era there.
