How is Alves performing this season?

Trained with the first team today. Hopefully on the bench but I doubt it 🤷🏼

Interesting

Worth him experiencing how tough the step up is physically by training with the first team

I’ve no idea about his work ethic and whether he will spend the time he needs to in the gym or whether it’s too early for his body

He's like a whippet, but already quite muscular. Will inevitably at 16 still be very lightweight though, I do like how we are exposing him to the steps up in class as early as possible though. Technically he's sublime.

At 16 he’s too young to spend too much time in the gym - he will still be growing

can’t see BR exposing him to first team football this season

Agreed, can't think of many 16 year old of his build play PL football but good to hear he's training from time to time with the 1st team already.

Maybe a lesson learn't from Sidnei, ensuring they can see a pathway into the first team.

Someone said that last summer that Alves had been promised a pathway from Rudkin in attempt to ensure he didn't leave elsewhere.

I'd imagine bringing in McGuinness solidifies that for Alves and for other academy lads too, as that's exactly his role: to help create that pathway for them.

Or at least, that's how I interpret it.

Absolutely!

I wonder how much weight Paul has outside the academy. Any pathway will need a willing manager. Brendan did give Sidnei a first team half and has generally played Thomas. Hopefully Paul will reassure loanee clubs too.

Very easy to slag off our setup but of you look at the players we've produced, the ones we've got coming through and even the amount playing in the football league it's in good shape. The new additions will help enormously too.

I don't think you can say BR is not a willing manager.

His given debut too McAteer, KDH, Leshabela, Daley-Campbell, Thomas, Tavares and Hirst all of them have played in the PL other than Campbell.

Rodgers is like any manager of an ambitious club, he won't just lob academy players in if there's better and more established players available bit he is very good at trying to incorporate academy players in to the 1st team and I've no gripe with Rodgers on this.

The one benefit of Rodgers horrendous ability to keep our squad from injury problems is that he has to then give the academy players opportunities, so every cloud eh?

Well, it has speeded up Thomas development.

Is Guy Branston still the loan manager?

I think he has gone out on loan.

My next sentence mentioned he was?

So I expect we are going to be taking a fair few players from the Under 23s and possibly even the Under 18s tomorrow, who will then elso have to take from the younger age groups themselves

A lot of squad shuffling going to be happening tomorrow, expecting another Covid outbreak within the next week

I was thinking this. At the minute they've gone back to bubbles which has meant the likes of Nelson and McAteer have largely been the only U23 players around the 1st team and as the injury crisis has worsened we've still not been tempted to add more and more. Yet we now have to do that and we either do what Rodgers did last Jan/Feb and surround his 1st team with 5-10 academy players and then leave the U18's and U23's to make do with what's left, or we risk spreading covid across all 3 age groups as we try to manage the demands of many games at these age groups.

Absolute nightmare. Alves training yesterday with the 1st team would suggest at the very least they are probably just all bunged in together, I would be amazed if he's in the squad but who knows.

Shame Pennant or Popov haven't been training with the 1st team given we've zero strikers but maybe they'll now step up to the U23's and then Reece Evans who's been smashing it at U16's steps up to the U18's etc.
