I just don’t think 3 cb and wing backs work. 4-3-3 is imo is best for us.
so I’d go with, obviously with everyone fit

                        Kasper

Ricardo Soyuncu  Evans  Bertrand/Justin
                Tielmans Ndidi Praet

              Maddison Vardy Barnes

tbh I’m torn between Justin and Bertrand. Just think you need a natural left footed full back. For me Praet is a solid and influential midfielder. I’d be disappointed if he left. I know we’ve signed Daka and Soumare but that’s what I think is the best formation for us. I just think 3 cbs and wing backs is too negative especially at home.

I worry about Maddison having to provide some width for us in this formation but it is a way to get both him and Barnes on together and gives us that nice mix of 3 CM's with Soumare and option to replace Praet if we need some more steal in there

Bertrand and Justin will be a battle, but I also think Luke Thomas will be busting a gut to get starts too! May the best man win - it's all good for us!

If Ricardo gets back to his best, he will provide all the width we need on the right side. The right sided wide player can then drift inside and operate through the centre and half space.

Maddison could do that job but a left footed player would suit that position better. Maddison has played that role previously for us but only on the left side so he can drift inside on his stronger right foot.

  • 4 competitions.
  • Some players currently injured (Justin, Evans)
  • Some players coming back from injury (Barnes, Castagne)
  • Some not necessarily 'right' yet (Ricardo, Maddison)
  • Injuries, suspensions, rotation
  • Covid disruption

Just like last season, there will be no such thing as 'the starting 11' this coming season.

With us doing the majority of our business early and a lack of rumours from credible ITKs about further incomings, we could be as we are for the start of the season.

I am curious how people think we might line-up, as I am struggling to put a formation/selection together where we get all our best players on the pitch with balance

I'm worried we rotate so much we don't get into a rhythm or create an identify or formula which fully takes advantage of the talent we have.

I'm also thinking vardy may be used as an impact sub but not sure how that effects our shape

Rotation is part of the modern game. Especially with our small squad. Didn't Fergie go something like 10 years without naming the same PL starting 11 two games in a row?

Why do people have Maddison in their sides? He’s been nothing short of woeful for a good year or so and his off field antics barely warrant a recall.

I also don’t think we will see Soumare from the off too, seems as though he doesn’t know a word of English! Think we will ease him in slowly.

How would you start the season if all fit? You thinking Praet if no Soumare/Madders?

How come? He rarely misses the target when he shoots and I think we’re going to create more chances this season, I think he’s only just started.

Needs to improve his first touch dramatically. Rodgers has mentioned this a few times too. Bounces off him at times.

He is our best finisher though and that overrides his weaknesses when he is on it!

I think he will be 3rd choice behind Vardy and Daka, but still get a lot of game time with rotation

Monstrous

....the front three on paper does not work!!!

But Nacho's inclination to drop off and in effect take up a #10 role could work out well and could be a big surprise. I feel Nacho will be the one to suffer in our new setup.

Tbh I wonder if it would suit Madders more then Vardy or Kel if he was to play the deeper forward role like Firminho does

No Soumare?

I know, I just haven't seen enough of him and I really want to try get Praet in the team to give him a fair crack.

Fully understand people and maybe Rodgers picking him for extra steal in midfield though.

I could see us toying with 4-3-1-2 with the " 1-2 " being Barnes Daka Iheanacho in a fluid front 3, with Iheanacho dropping deep or drifting out to the right and allowing Barnes his freedom and Dake pulling the defence all over the place.

The midfield 3 would have to be Soumare/KDH/Praet Tielemans Ndidi

I like this. Vardy/Daka rotating perhaps. Any time from 60 mins on defences would be cr*pping themselves when they see Vardy warming up to come on against tired legs. This would also allow us to change shape to say a 4-1-3-2 or 4-1-4-1 easily during a game if we need stretch teams with the likes of Maddison, Albrighton etc to come off the bench (even better if we do actually get a new RW). It would even be quite easy to change to a back 3 or double pivot with minimal changes to personnel when we need to close a game out with the squad we now seem to be building if we have a little better luck with injuries this season

I don’t know, he just doesn’t strike me as someone who can keep up form on a regular basis. He did it last season, but we all know he can just as easily go back to not being able to control the ball and standing around all game. He was pretty poor in the last 3 games also. Who knows, I’d love him to do well, but can’t help the feeling it was a massive purple patch in form

Tielemans or Barnes won’t start, hopefully no injuries in the friendlies, strong bench with changes at half time giving the new boys a taste of Wembley and things to come… :scarf:

I think with the signings that we’ve mad we could be quite likely to set up similarly to the tactics Rodgers deployed as Liverpool manager. Two strikers and a winger is how I feel Brendan prefers his front three with the quicker of the typical strikers playing as a wide forward. I also think this formation could get the best out of our potent attacking options such as Iheanacho, Daka/Vardy, and Barnes.

I would set up like this: 43E69A1B-2308-424F-B642-3C18FFAF8B54.jpeg.118344a1eab6758c9132810fc568ad05.jpeg

I feel that the pace of Barnes and Daka to go beyond Iheanacho may suit both them and Kelechi’s trait of dropping deeper into the 10 position. By using this we would also be play as many of our attacking players together as possible without sacrificing the defensive aspect of the game. Vardy would also benefit as we would be able to use him more sparingly as an impact sub and starting him in games when the situation requires him. This would help ease the burden on him because he isn’t getting any younger.

There are so many similarities with this Liverpool XI:

In my opinion our new signings seem to point to us moving towards a similar style to this. Soumare joining provides us with the opportunity to rotate him in for games where we need more steel in midfield coming in for either the attacking midfielder or one of the front three in a similar way to how he used Lucas in the 13/14 season. The similarities even stretch to the inverted left back with Flanagan and JJ! This formation also brought the best out of Coutinho so therefore hopefully will do similar for Maddison.
