Why has the ref gotta decide an offside at the side of the pitch?

I guess it's because Van Dijk wasn't the one heading it back across so its up to the ref to decide his involvement in the goal. Stupid though

How is it offside?

That's a shocking decision. Not even a foul from van Dijk.

Van Dijk is in a offside position and stops the defender from tracking the ball

Offside and a foul. Either way Van Djik plays a big role in the goal being scored so had to be ruled out surely

VAR official bottled it.

Well my posting history will confirm that I have no love for Liverpool whatsoever, but that seems to be a decision taken after the fact which isn't all that clear cut.

I think the goal should have stood.

His foot was offside. Clearly involved in the play as he blocked the defender off.

I think he barely touches James. Barely a foul.

There is no way that James would have got anywhere near Mane.

The block had no effect on the play.

Great close-up replay just now.  Shows Van Dijk held the defender just long enough to prevent him from reaching the ball first.

Excellent example of VAR changing the game.  A call that would rarely get made -- but VAR is going to catch it.

Do you like VAR making such a call or not?  Matter of opinion.

I think this one did create the goal and was justified.

Especially against Liverpool

Whether it should be a goal seems to depend on who you want to win/lose.

If that was us I'm sure more would be saying it should be allowed

Still a block though. Should of been a foul

Blocks like that are two a penny in every corner or free kick and are rarely if ever punished
