Cheers @Bert

Love you xx

I still think you’re a twat now. But a loveable twat who I’ve always got time for 👍🏻

I stopped listening to him a while ago as he seemed to be doing was berating his fellow presenter (the odd ball with the double barrel name). Was a proper sub and gimp thing going on here!

I found him really annoying, a bit like James Corden, Alan Brazil (Talk Sport)and  Forrest Gump. At least Nigel Pearson saw through him told him to f@ck off

...just out of interest, how is it you were in the vicinity on both occasions !!!

Outside the club like a few other thousand after Spurs lost to Chelsea.

And the Sunday after the helicopter crash just like hundreds of others paying my respect.

I just started speaking to him on both occasions? Is he too famous to talk to???

Each year I take a break from listening to the football forum over the close season. On Monday, I tuned in again looking forward to a preview of the new season and within seconds Ian had me reaching for the off button because of his insistence on playing the champions league theme.

My understanding is that a year or two back, listeners overwhelmingly voted against hearing it every week. But every week, without fail, he still references not being allowed to play it. And then on Monday he plays it regardless.

Why does he insist on persisting with it? He’s like uncle nob head at family events, always rolling out the same gags.

You can almost feel Matt Piper and guests etc rolling their eyes.

The fact that we’ve missed out on the champions league in the way we have makes this joke even less funny for me.

Calling Owynn his full name each and every time is another one which has worn thin in my opinion.

Come on Ian, you’re a great commentator and nobody can fault your  passion for Leicester. I just wish you’d focus on what you do best and stop trying to be a comedian.

Now now, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls..Owen.snigger.Owen..snigger, snigger

He's an awful commentator and I find it very difficult to games on RL. Piper is very good though.

Standard reference is the nationality of a player..a great goal by the Nigerian/ Algerian..

I struggle to listen to any Football on the radio as they make it sound like we are about to score even when we are still in our own half!

Or, a few seconds later, Leicester in trouble, goal. Failing to describe what actually happened

I always remember Stringer interviewing Pearson after a pre season game and Pearson telling another journo trying to butt in ‘wait your ****ing turn’ loud and clear on Radio Leicester 😂

NP called the other journo a "balloon head". A bizarre yet brilliant insult.

His side kick Owen Palter Atkison or whatever his name is really tries hard to replicate the way Stringer delivers his sentences, almost like he is trying hard to copy his style and bad one liners.

I don't know whether anyone else has picked up on this. He should try and get a style to suit himself rather than copy someone elses

Why do they say clob instead of club

" Foxes" Literally the only person that talks about City using the nickname .

Annoys me way more than it should .

Spot on.

That's my main criticism of Stringer.

In Leicester, we're "The City" not "The Foxes".

What proper fan says "Foxes" ?   Foxes is a baby name, the sort 7 years olds use.

Probably gonna be in the minority here but he’s actually a decent bloke, of course he won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, just like me and you won’t be. How many of you know him on a personal level? Whenever we bump into each other, he’s always got time to talk, asks about your well-being & family etc.

I can bet my life that most people saying he’s this that and the other are just making their perception of him from what they hear over the radio.

Spend ten minutes or so with the bloke and you’ll see he’s not as bad as you think.

Spot on. Yes he does have some annoying personality quirks that make me realise how absolutely spot on Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge portrayal is, but at the end of the day he comes across as a nice enough bloke, someone with a long history using his platform to raise thousands for local charities. Personally I like his commentary, too.

If you listen to some other local radio commentators (or those that went before him) then it's easy to be appreciative of Strings. I like him.

Well well, I certainly did not know this.

Why is this forum called 'Foxes Talk' then?

Eh?

Sorry, what is the point of this thread?

Not sure it's in anyone's interests to have people queueing up to give him a bashing. He might be a public figure, but it doesn't give an excuse for some of the comments on here. There have been enough stories recently about footballers who have really been affected reading about themselves on social media.

If you don't like him, don't listen. Or maybe write to his bosses at Radio Leicester if you have a genuine grievence.

By nature of his role, he’s a public persona in the Leicestershire area and if he comes across as a bit of a bellend on a public broadcast then people are well within their right to say that when he is discussed on a public forum. So less of the righteousness about people having a less favourable opinion.

It seems like people who have a personal relationship with him speak fondly of him but there’s quite clearly an Ian Stringer when the mics are on (or the cameras are rolling) and an Ian Stringer behind closed doors, which in itself says a lot about him.

He’s shown his cards too many times for wanting to be the centre of attention for me to truly believe that he’s this selfless and humble character. In actual fact charity work is not always the best indication of a person’s virtues. There are plenty who do charity work for how it makes them look or how it makes them feel. A good act of course but it’s not all about the charity. Unfortunately he’s one in my book.

I think the shows BBC Radio Leicester put on, for local radio, are decent. I think Stringer is a decent enough presenter and a decent enough commentator for local radio. They do more than you might expect for local radio by thinking about different formats (I.e. the Thursday one in the pub) and getting some good guests on (I.e. national journalists and local reporters from the upcoming opposition). Matt Piper is a good listen and provides some great insight. They deserve credit for that.

But I’m constantly in this battle with Stringer. I think “ah, you’re alright actually” and then he does or says something where I think “ah no, actually you’re still a tosspot”. The OP’s examples of the opening to the forum was a great example of this: immature, amateurish, all about him and his mates than the listeners or the show.

Quite simply, that’s why he’ll always split opinion. Everyone falls somewhere on that scale of tolerance and he’s regularly testing it.

Public figure being discussed on a public forum. No reason people can’t pass comment, even if it’s not all positive.

Imagine the trouble we’d be in if we pretended the world was all sweetness and nice and everyone and everything was perfect and no one ever said anything ‘bad’. You need a range and mixture of opinion, emotion and interpretation in life. It can be all unicorns, roses and rainbows unfortunately.

If you do like him, feel free to state why and contribute to the discussion to take it in the direction you feel it should. Or maybe write to his bosses at Radio Leicester if you have a genuine appreciation.

He seems a decent bloke but his persona and commentary style on RL is a bit of a rollercoaster for me.

There’s some points where I think he’s fantastic, usually when he’s focusing on the actual football,  and there are other times where I feel like turning off.

I know he’s a Leicester boy but I just wish he would tone it down a little, other stations have commentators who are fans and aren’t quite so exuberant.

Nothing against Matt or Owen but it’s almost like he needs an impartial straight man by his side.

...spot on!!!

I have met Ian before and can confirm he’s actually a nice sound bloke. No ego about the bloke at all and genuinely seems down to earth. I don’t really listen to the radio for Leicester anymore but when I did I always found him entertaining and actually did ask the managers hard questions after and wasn’t just a propagandist for the club.
