It's a list of managers who had a sustained period of decline in their reign. I don't think that applies to O'Neill, Puel et al.

I thought so - Puel debatable to some (he was just not popular I think), as was the start O'Neill got off to but overall great! Gordon Milne's disastrous start to 1983-84 had some calling for his head too from memory!

100% Peter Taylor. He had decent funds to spend thanks to the Heskey sale and wasted it. He brought in crap like Benjamin Lewis akinbyi and a mercenary in Dennis the c u n t wise. Literally ripped apart father O’Neil work and put his own stamp that ruined us for years to come 👊💦

Milne always started seasons badly! So you're spot on there.

 

If I were to bang on about what constitutes 'decline' I'd say it were more sustained than, say, the dodgy first four months under O'Neill or a rough patch or two under Puel. We were 12th when he took over, finished 9th, dropped to 12th the next year after some poor form when he was sacked, and ended up 9th. I just don't think that classifies as decline in the same way as a relegation, or a lengthy period in the bottom half of the second tier.

 

I'd say the same about the Great Escape, or the poor final quarter of the Maresca season. Lengthy blips rather than downward spirals!

As bad as RVN was and Marti was worse in a worse division. It’s unfair to call them the worst as they have had absolutely no backing whatsoever, not one proper player signed permanently. They were bad but set up to fail. Marti shades RVN as he is in the Championship which is doggo, managerial experts like Alex Neil.

Puel objectively did a good job with us, better than most realised at the time. Don't love the bloke, but respect where it's due

Puel sorted us out, kept us up, brought good players to the club but never pushed on. We needed a manager like Rodgers for success. But Puel is nowhere near the worse managers we’ve ever had, he never had us in a relegation battle.

Actually, I'm all in on Rodgers, because I feel "worst" can also encompass "biggest tw*t". Absolutely odious man, only interested in himself. The opposite of Nige, if you will. Wrecked us, with active assistance from Rudders

I hated finishing 5th, 5th, 8th,  Winning the Fa Cup, winning the community shield, a European semi final a league cup semi final, regularly beating “the big six” 

 

Bring back Peter Taylor

We did sh1t in Europe under Rodgers, for the record. Embarrassingly so.

 

Edited to say that we fluked the FA cup. Easy draws, second best in the final. Weird COVID year. Not taking away from it and love the memory to this day, but if we're honest with ourselves...

 

Edited to ask what you think of Brendan's impact on our current plight...
