Greaves began his career with Chelsea before spells at AC Milan, Spurs and West Ham.

He scored 269 goals in 379 games for Tottenham and holds the record for the most goals in a season for Spurs with 37 in 1962-63.

A member of the World Cup-winning squad in 1966, Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 games for England.

My biggest memory is of our play off win against Derby and as we went up to lift the trophy our whole end singing “are you watching Jimmy Greaves?” Can’t for the life of me remember why now? He must have given us some stick on Saint and Greavsie or something.

In a world before we were saturated with football news from every angle Saint and Greavsie was a real joy to watch. A light hearted look at the world of football.

RIP Jimmy

Apparently he used to talk us down a lot on the Central Match Live

We lost Ian St.John this year too. :(

Appearances: 379, goals: 266 - and six hat tricks for England. Possibly the greatest striker to grace the English game.

One of the reasons that Chelsea loath Spurs so much was over his return to English football to North London from Milan. To see former Chelsea boys Greaves and Venables on the teamsheets in the cockney cup final in '67 and deprive them of what was then the biggest prize in English football was a dagger in the heart.

His record as the record goalscorer in the history of top flight football is his most impressive but never gets talked about which is bizarre as it should be *the* record and stat of English football.

A good friend of mine is an ex pro footballer. He was a defender.

Always says when asked about the best forward he ever played against, Greavsie was. In fact his exact comments are "Greavsie used to p*ss all over us.. "

A truly great player.

Remember him most for Central Television slagging Leicester off all the time !!! Can anyone remember chanting “ are you watching Jimmy greaves ?!” Great character though and the greatest English striker of all time. Sad times, rest in peace Jimmy.

When I was a kid growing up watching the central match live and he was on, it was always followed by family members saying how much he hates leicester and how he always used to slag us off. 🤣

Good idea that.

Just after the booing of the taking the knee...

Sad news of the passing of one of the true greats...

Anyone at WHL when he scored that amazing goal against us?.. beating 5/6 players, rounding Shilton and rolling the ball into the net. I was, and to this day it was the greatest goal I've ever seen.

This was the goal I posted about, a couple of years or so ago. I was at WHL when Jimmy scored it. He walzed and wove his way through the best defence in the country, at that time. I have a photograph of it still, in my very old scrap book. It remains as the best goal I have ever seen. Truly amazing.

Greavesie was such a talented player, and is a sad loss, to football.

RIP, Jimmy.

Both his playing career and Saint and Greavsie were before my time, but I vaguely remember some of his punditry work and I watched the recent BT Sport documentary on him (which was suberb, by the way, and would encourage anyone to watch it if it's still available).

He had his struggles in life but seemed to turn it around and always came across as a jovial character when I saw him on TV. If his life taught us anything it's that even the very best can suffer in retirement but can also turn things around.

One of the best in his playing days and an inspiration to many afterwards, I'm sure.

RIP.

Yes i was there..the only goal i have been pleased to see scored against us..and likewise the greatest goal i have ever seen, just a shame there were no tv cameras there that day....but there were photo headlines in the papers showing leicester defenders left sitting on the floor
