World Cup 2030: UK & Republic of Ireland FAs abandon 2030 bid to focus on Euro 2028

The UK and Republic of Ireland football associations have agreed not to bid for the 2030 World Cup.

They will instead focus on a joint bid to host Euro 2028.

The decision comes after the UK government committed £2.8m to a feasibility study into the bid.

Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) committee chair Julian Knight had previously described the prospective World Cup bid as a "giant, expensive vanity project".

The feasibility study included an analysis of the economic impact, the political football landscape and the likely costs of hosting major international tournaments.

Following the study, the football associations of the Republic of Ireland, England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland will focus on an official bid to host Uefa Euro 2028.

A statement said: "Hosting a Uefa Euro offers a similar return on investment, with the European tournament carrying a far lower delivery cost and the potential of the benefits being realised sooner.

"It would be an honour and a privilege to collectively host Euro 2028 and to welcome all of Europe.

"It would also be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the true impact of hosting a world-class football tournament by driving positive change and leaving a lasting legacy across our communities."

The UK government had previously said it would invest £550m in grassroots football if the 2030 bid was successful, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson hoping to "transform lives with a legacy to match the 2012 Olympics".

England failed with a bid - fronted by former captain David Beckham, Prince William and former prime minister David Cameron - to host the 2018 World Cup, which was staged in Russia.

The UK government said it supported the five football associations' decision and added that it remained "passionate about bringing a World Cup to the UK and Ireland when the time is right".

The associations say they will continue to "collaborate" with government partners about the next steps.

If successful it would be good to get a game or two at the KP.

Be surprised if we get it after the events at the Euro's final.

I dunno, UEFA love England hosting in the main. 2020 final aside (and there will be monumental crowd management changes in the future) they adore the £ that Wembley Stadium brings to them, and the kudos of a London based final. It's why it's had so many UCL finals recently.

Their execs will get to stay at plush London/Manc hotels. The sponsors will have a great time in the capital, the ticket sales and revenues will be sky high. Maybe we won't have unleashed thousands of arseholes from 18 months of restrictions by that point and we'll have calmed down a bit, too!

Looks like the only other confirmed bidder is Turkey (literally bid for every Euros since 2008 lol) and a Balkans-joint bid. I reckon we'll get 2028 and then Russia gets 2032, with Spain/Portugal getting 2030 WC/

Turks have felt hard done by in the past with the voting.

Didn’t Platini had the deciding vote for 2016 so obviously went for France !

Think South America will get the 2030 World Cup as that is where it all started.

It was, Platini basically said something along the lines of "Get a Turkish person as President if you want the Euros." Brazen.

The only thing that makes me doubt 2030 being in South America is timezone. 2026 will be in the Americas and that's your 5-8 hour time difference with the European market. I think they'll want to bring it back to a European friendly time zone for 2030. 2034 will be either in South America, Australia or (if they want it) China. You can quote me on all this inevitable wrongness very soon!

The incident at Wembley wouldn't enter into UEFA's thinking, I reckon. They still know that the UK is a much safer and more sponsor-friendly country to hold a major tournament in than pretty much everywhere else in Europe.

Ireland would be amazing, I hope 'we' get it just for the reason.

It would only be Dublin that would get games I would imagine.

Most of our big stadiums would not be suitable for it.

Doesn't make sense to lump Ireland on tbh

Probably guarantees a few extra votes.

Doubt the GAA would allow it even if they were all-seater too?

This. The reason we’re bidding for this is because we’ll win the bid. FIFA is a different matter and is far more corrupt.

Wouldn't be a major problem I reckon. The majority of GAA fans are also big into Soccer(Football)!

There is no all seater stadium so thats the first issue. The other is the grounds. Places like Killarney, Clones, Thurles are brilliant on match days but they work for the GAA only really. Think less King Power and more Filbert Street.

Don't think Everton would be considered until their new ground is ready. Feel they won't use four London stadiums either, but which of 3 other than Wembley would be dropped I do not know.

Villa Park would surely get some. Maybe Windsor Park too? Don't know how easily they could slap any extra seats on, but it's only 22k otherwise. Belfast can't be excluded in a bid like this though.

Everton new ground would be done by then. Yeah maybe Villa park but by then our ground will be 40,000 and a lot newer than theirs. Fair shout on Windsor.
