The Running Thread (formerly How fast can you run a 5k?)

21:57 at Penistone parkrun this morning, buzzing considering I went out with the mindset of today wasn't a push hard day, got to the 2.5k mark and decided to put some pace down and surprised myself. Buzzing for my Mrs as well who finished around 10m behind her twin who has always been a far stronger runner, nice to see others hard work pay off!

Only good thing about the weekend (after being ruined by overpaid players) was my night in Blackpool where I did a run down from North Blackpool to Lytham St Annes. Great scenery and one of my most enjoyable.

Was also my first run in about ten days due to being crocked on my left leg. Did 5k in 21:42, knowing I still had more in the tank. 15k total to get down there and another 7km on top running half way back as a recovery run.

Bad news is my leg is achy and tender again. Hoping not to have to be out the picture for so long again though

Got to run 14 miles tomorrow and after about 10 days off, leg day in the gym has completely ruined me. This is going to be spectacularly bad.

This wasn’t as bad as expected but my legs were/are on fire.

Up to 15 miles today. Usual battle getting into it where the first 5/6k until I had an energy gel inside me was a struggle but then ended it with my fastest 10k in a while lol.

Wish this hot weather would **** off now.

Yeah 9.30am this morning and it was already stinking hot. Heart rate through the roof.

Mind you this could mean some great times when it does eventually cool off!

Only managed 9k this morning

I dont know what's going wrong with me but 3 Sundays on the bounce last month I ran decent times for 15k, 16k and 15k and felt fairly fresh. This month I feel like my legs are dead. Not a good sign for the Leicester Half which has been my main focus considering I spent the first half of the year mainly injured.

Not running much and eating absolute shite at the minute, but weight staying the same for now as the all the good stuff gradually turns to mush

Not running at all and eating absolute shite at the minute, and back over 80kg. I hate nearly being 50.

Back to it next week.

Do you take energy gels out with you? I wasn’t enjoying it today until I had my first on 6k which really helped. Also finding listening to podcasts really helps on longer runs because I get distracted much easier.

Yeah I use gels every half hour (type 1 diabetic, so can't really go without). I just seem to be devoid of energy from the off this month with no real explanation! I always have music on but Podcast might be a better way to distract me. I'll give it a go!

Might be worth taking one before you start or even trying to get your heart rate up in a quick warm up. I do generally find that the start is often the hardest bit and have to mentally battle past that stage to keep going.

Quick question for people. Are ON trainers worth the money? Or is there another brand you would recommend. I'm not doing a massive amount of running at the minute, so they would also be used for decent distance walking.

I usually stick to Adidas due to friends working there, but I fancy a change.

Nice aesthetic and a good lifestyle shoe but its a no from me for running.

They're CloudTec sole is fundamentally flawed and yet they seem to want to persist with it as the USP.

I'd stick to a brand dedicated to running and willing still to innovate.

Can't go wrong with good Asics imo. (Im always an advocate of Novablasts).

If you have the time, go to a running shop. They will let you try multiple brands, different styles, and you’ll get a gait analysis. The prices are the same but it’s worth the time.

Thank you :) Thats what I was thinking with them regarding the sole and wasn't sure if it was just me.

I used to have Asics before moving over to Adidas (due to price I can get them for). I'm fairly neutral for running shoes so have stuck to Ultraboost.

Sometimes it nice to have a change, but I also dont want to give my feet any issues for the sake of it.

Oh on my advice only certain running stores have the ON contract to sell them. Same applies with Hoka apparently

I can imagine that. They feel abit like a Castore kind of brand IMO, which im not really a fan of either.

This, unsurprisingly, has ruined me. Just been to the gym for my upper body session which is quite light and I had nothing in the tank from the start.
