Yes lad!

Madders and Barnes now need to have that as their goal going forward.

Not sure how much more Madders can do. He’s outperformed ALL the other England midfielders this season.

I have no doubt that if Madders did not have a history with Southgate he would have been selected. Cutting of his nose to spite his face

He’d fall over surely?  Backwards.

Didn’t know anything about him

whem we signed him from Luton but having watched him regularly since then a top player, very athletic and doesn’t make many mistakes. Fantastic to have him in the England squad, he can only get better from the experience

Good for him, but looks short of his pre injury form. Astonishing that Maddison isn't included.

Southgate never liked Maddison to begin with and then Maddison gave him a convenient excuse to blacklist him.  Not surprising in any way to me.

Needs everyone possible to criticise the decision to omit him. Its criminal.

He's in the squad.... Congrats JJ on being called up.

I don’t think this is a good thing, not keen on our players being anywhere near England.

The tactical mindset actually isn’t all that different.

Happy for him, but I don’t know how he’s made the squad if I’m honest. Hasn’t looked anywhere near his best, and has cost us a few goals with his mistakes.

Not sure if Southgate actually watches Leicester given Madders’ omission & JJ inclusion.

We have no decent left backs.

A) England have no left footed left backs available better than him and last season he was better than all of them anyway bar perhaps Chilwell

B) The mistakes he made after his return from injury and poor performances were generally at right back were they not? Since he's moved back on the left and Castagne on the right he's been much better.

Not in the hating Chilwell camp but JJ was miles ahead of him and a bit ahead of Luke Shaw (who'd had a great season). And that was with playing wing back, right and centre back in a 3.

Gets back to that form or even close to it and he should be a shoe in for every tournament squad because of the versatility.

Just glad Rodgers finally remembered that he's our best left back

Targett has kept 8 clean sheets this season which is 1 more than our entire squad in 5 less games.

I’m not denying his talent and last season he was a class above. But has he done anything to warrant a call up this year? Not for me. I would much rather we picked players on form than prior performances.

Also on your last point I’m fairly sure a couple of his mistakes were at LB (I remember 2 headers he didn’t challenge well enough for).

Well deserved for the lad! Hopefully he can cement himself as a regular over the next 6-12 months. Looked a rough diamond and over the course of the 20/21 season he became a phenomenal player. Hopefully he can get back to those heights with a good pre season behind him.

If he starts next season like he finished this one I reckon he's got an excellent chance of a World cup place.

Southgate is looking towards the world cup knowing he might be without his first choice left backs from last season and is taking a punt that JJ will rediscover his top form at the start of next season but wants to take a good look at him now.  You could argue he should be calling up 2-3 prospective left backs in this squad to have a good look at them now, in the event that Chillwell and or Shaw don't make it to the World Cup. The situation at left backs isn't very good considering Thomas was being mentioned as a v possible option a few months back (clearly not ready for that level) and Southgate was watching him closely in the u21s - think it was Mitchell from Palace who got called up in the end who's done OK this season.

It is a bit of a weird one. I have a feeling he would have been Englands first-choice left-back at the Euros had he not done his cruciate.

The problem is that he is still not back to his best following the injury.  Surely it would be much more beneficial for him to do some more rehabilitation work in the summer along with rest so he is as close to full speed at the start of next season. It would possibly be better for England long-term too.
