Just reward for coming back the way he has from an awful, awful injury. Maybe not hit quite the same level as he was prior but most of it is still there. Reassuring too there is a way into the England set up for our lads, Maddison's exclusion is bizarre at this point, from the outside, you could start to question if the selector has an issue picking our players.

 

It's only one battle won anyway. He now has to push into the starting XI.

Once he moved to left back he's been pretty bloody good again. We know he's probably better going forward than pound for pound defending but he's still good enough in that area and will improve IMO.

He’s the only player in the squad who actually plays left back or left wing back 

 

trippier has covered there but only because there is no one else

 

JJ has a chance to stake his claim to go to the WC behind chilly - there would be no need to pick trippier once chilly is fit.

Chilwell is back and actually came on as a last minute sub on Sunday. Guessing too early for this Nations Cup thing but probably be in the World Cup squad.

Surprised he’s in ahead of Mitchell tbh. Before his injury I was touting him to be a dark horse for our Euro squad because his versatility means as a back up he covers both fullback positions allowing us to not have to omit any of the Grealish/Foden/Mount/Maddison stack. But obviously he got the injury and we took 458 right backs.

Hopefully he can show Gareth his pre injury form while he’s in the camp and make a good impression.

Too soon for Chilwell though and wouldn’t be surprised if both Chelsea and Chilwell would say that too.

 

Great for JJ but can’t help but feel his current form if picked might not highlight him as his best.

 

Can imagine him getting some game time though which means I might actually have interest in a Nations League game.

Great news for JJ and well deserved but how can Southgate still ignore Maddison with his strong recent form and 17 goals? Southgate is still holding the casino trip in 2019  against him. We will never win anything with such a staid, boring safety-first manager.

Before his injury he was walking into the team at left back let alone the squad. Think he is only at 60% since he has come back though.

He’s better than Shaw and many of us (including me) prefer him to Chilwell but I’m surprised that he’s straight in after only just coming back from a major injury and not yet hitting top form. That being said I’m really happy for him. That doesn’t excuse the treatment of Maddison though. As an England fan I want to see the best players, and ones that have some capacity to scare opponents with their skill set. Maddison is one of few English midfielders that fit this description. I’d probably say Bellingham is the other. Southgate says he picks players on form but that’s simply not true.
