I don't like having youth keepers as 3rd choice I'd rather keep an experienced pro and let the young lads go out a play first team football, if we'd done that with Iversen the last couple of years he wouldn't be the player he is now

Rodgers likes having 3 "senior" keepers so would not be surprised to see us go out and pick up a 30+ keeper on a free

What's senior though? Iversen is 24, played 145 games on loan and represented every level for his country below the full squad. In many ways he's more senior than Ward, who personally I rate very highly.

I think Iversen as no 2 could be classed as established/experienced now if not senior. We could then bring in a more senior 30+ keeper rather than having a youthful keeper (Brad Young) as no 3.

for me Kasper's age or older maybe someone like Ben Foster with a coaching role thrown in if they are looking to get into that side, someone who is more of a coach and emergency cover, one of Ward or Iversen needs to be on loan playing premier league football next season unless Kasper leaves

We should keep Ward. He’s a good goalie and imagine if he had the same sort of game time as kasper. Of course any player will thrive if they are in the 1st team playing week in week out. If wars goes watch him become one of the top keepers in the league. That will be hard to accept for us watching that. Will probably have a great World Cup tournament too along with Hennessy for Wales.

Ben Foster?

It's not necessarily a given that Rodgers likes to have 3 senior keepers...

12/13 Liverpool: Reina, Jones and then 23 yr old Gulacsi who made no apps

13/14 Liverpool: Mignolet, Jones and then 20 yr old Ward who made no apps. Not in Europe

14/15 Liverpool: Mignolet, Jones and then 21 yr old Ward who made no apps

15/16 Liverpool: Mignolet, Bogdan and then 22 yr old Ward who made no apps

16/17 Celtic: Gordon, de Vries and Bailly

17/18 Celtic: Gordon, Bain and de Vries. But Bain only arrived in January so they spent the first half of the season with just the two senior keepers

18/19 Celtic: Gordon and Bain

I would suggest it is probably more a Stowell thing - he likes to bring three keepers out to warm up pre-match. Not only do we have three senior keepers (Schmeichel/Ward/Iversen) to choose from but we are overflowing at youth level - Stolarczyk, Young, Odunze, Doherty, Chibueze, Weeks and Addai are all 17 or older.

Highly doubt Ward will be leaving anytime soon with his signing a lengthy contact last season.

That's basically confirmation that Ward is off then

I honestly don't get the point in having some old keeper who is probably worse than your youth keepers. Seems a weird concept to me

Lets the kids get games under their belts either on loan or with the youth teams and means your backup is both less likely to kick off about not playing and more useful to have around in training in terms of passing on experience.

Being a 3rd choice keeper is a bit of an easier life really.

£10k a week to basically tell the number one keeper how great he’s doing.

There are only so many full time professional clubs and most of them would prefer not to have a rookie keeper. Getting the young keepers out on loan for first team experience can't be that easy.

People forget about what older players with experience bring to training when they’re not getting a game .

I'd hope our 35 year old keeper and experienced coaching staff would be able to manage that.

I fully understand the benefits experiences heads bring, especially winners. I don't see what extra Jakupovic brings to the table that Kasper, Stowell and the youth Keeping coaches already wouldn't.

Hell if we had a 40 year old Gigi Buffon I'd get it, an absolute born winner who will have an elite mentality. A journeyman keeper picking up an easy wage doesn't strike me as a vital cog.

I’m not saying he’s a vital cog more the fact that some of these players help in training more than we see . Kasper possibly could be  too busy doing his own thing as he’s our number one where as our 3rd choice keeper probably got more time on his hands .

Plenty of experiences heads have made sense to me, especially when they actually earn their wage and contribute on the pitch, Pearson was a master of blending old heads with young talent.

I've just never understood the fascination with having some old keeper who should be playing a level or two below sat in as a "3rd choice"

Even Man City having Scott Carson just baffles me haha. You've got people on the pay roll who's job it is to work with these lads every day and help them develop mentally, physically and technically. No need to have an expensive babysitter on the best part of 20-30k per week. I bet Carson is probably on a couple of million a year, it's so weird to me.

I’m guessing it’s more the fact that they physically contribute during the training  where as the others don’t . For instance say the coaching staff are running shooting drills they are going to need a goalkeeper to take part in them they won’t go in goal themselves . Then you’ve got the whole squad doing shooting drills so you’ll need more than one keeper . Now i I don’t know but it could be something as simple as him telling him the best place to put  the ball from a certain angle where it’s most difficult for the keeper .

Ward is a solid keeper but absolutely nowhere near being one of the best in the league and never will be. He’d probably start for a newly promoted side but I don’t see a mid table side that he starts for

Yes! Let’s get Foster in and we can see more behind the scenes on his YouTube channel
