I'm no fan of his attitude but he has 10 England caps, a solid Premier League career, and a successful Championship winning campaign with us under his belt. He's no slouch or shithouse; let's not be myopic.

To suggest he isn't good enough is churlish. He's just been a bit of a bad egg.

As another poster above - another good season and a thank you very much would be the best outcome.

We can't keep letting players walk away for free.

Can someone help me with what he did last year please?

I thought he was asked to stay over one night. And he declined.

Maybe he has a contractual agreement. And RVN wanted him to adjust.

Maybe Winks had a family issue.

I think he lives Hertfordshire/London way and commutes, Ruud wanted him to stay one night a week at the training ground, which he declined. I believe his wife/girlfriend had just had a baby at the time. Ruud then froze him out.

Promotion is worth more than any deal we'll get now and winks is central to any promotion push

And if we keep him and still don't get promoted?

Winks is like a Carrick, Pirlo or Jamie Redknapp style player (although not upto their standard obviously).  Basically a great passer, doesn't have much pace, isn't going to score many goals or win many tackles - but can dominate the game if given time on the ball.  If you are the stronger team players like this can be a huge asset as they get a lot of possession, but when you are the weaker team the game often bypasses them and they look like a passenger.  Which is why Winks will be great for us this season in the championship and should be starting as often as possible.   It's also sadly why he looked crap in the premiership with us!

A perfect summary, great post

Then he'll be out of contact and either leave or renegotiate

....and we miss out on the fee we could have gotten for him not to mention being out his wages for the year.

People on here couldn't wait to get rid last season, now coming out with every reason under the sun why he should stay. Fickle

Because he's too good for this league and not good enough for the one we were in last season.

A Nod's as good as a Winks.

He wasn't really even given a chance to prove he was good enough last season

Played 22 times. I still never got over him letting Trossard basically walk past him to score the second goal at Arsenal.

True, but I'd put money on him being ok on the premiership if he actually had a midfielder of a similar level playing with him, instead of the championship / league 1 dross we have

Winks gone would save us round £10m including a fee and wages. A replacement would cost us say £7.5m and £2.5m for 4/5 seasons. I'm edging towards keeping Winks because I think he gives us quality in this division and could be the difference in going up or not. A new player is a gamble and no one else in the squad  can do what Winks does. Keep.

Winks is class at this level and brought some composure, control and passing that was lacking in the first half on Sunday. In fact at times the midfield was completely bypassed before he came on with Skipp being pushed forward and Soumare not providing adequate defensive cover. In the last Championship season he was the metronome spraying the ball around and keeping us ticking over. With BEK likely to leave it would be a step to far to let him go unless a better replacement is lined up and I find that hard to believe.

  1. Anybody who read the rubbish that was posted pre match and during the match on Sunday v Wednesday  should automatically know that Winks is a fine player, as are all the other members of the squad.  Shut up and support, don't try and be a professional coach, because you will never be one.

Based on one half against the worst side you could possibly face at this level as well.

Circumstance favours him annoyingly though.

To give my assessment, Winks did very well under Maresca, seemed to know his role really well was integral to the team and thrived. New manager came in, different system and he wasn’t as adaptable & quite honestly not at the level we needed to stay up.

At championship level and with this manager we have one of the best midfielders in the league. To all those saying we should get rid, you should look at the lack of depth we have of number 8 or number 10 type midfielders. The fact we’re linked with no one speaks volumes, I’d rather him in than out
