It did,  but the old rule about being played onside if it touched a defender was abolished in about 1972, and the new rule is specific that it doesn't apply to a blocked shot. It only applies if the defender has time and space to control the ball.

Ah ok !

Thanks .

Didn't think it was that complicated.

I thought if the player is offside when the ball is first touched forward by a teammate he's offside, irrespective on whether it's subsequently taken a nick of a defender, which is what happened yesterday.

It's complicated, but after two or three goes at it, the laws committee have made it make sense.  It's part of section 2.

https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-11---offside

Broadly speaking, if Smith the defender has time to see the ball coming and no particular pressure, and chooses (say) to head it back to the goalkeeper having not seen Jones the forward in the way, then it's not offside.  When Bloggs the goalkeeper lumped it forward, Jones was in an offside position but not interfering; when Smith deliberately played the ball in a controlled manner, it became a new phase of play so Jones was not offside.

If the ball had been wellied at Smith from five yards so that he didn't have time to adjust and it flicked off his head in an uncontrolled way, then Jones would still be offside because Smith hadn't played the ball in a controlled manner.

The law is specific that attempts to block a shot don't count as deliberately playing the ball.

Another predictable night in the Championship then ..

Somehow we are still in play off contention!

Leeds go from zero to top and actually had 2 good goals disallowed .

That is one of those unfounded twitter rumours I think.

Nothing official but suppose they wouldn’t admit it openly .

@Super_horns Hi fella, I’m bored at work and I know you enjoy posting in here and I’m all for it seeing as we’ll be back at VR next season, and on a totally unrelated tangent I’ve needed to get this off my chest for ages..

Just how much of an unlikeable footballer is Ryan Porteous by the way!

Watched him against Luton a few times and obviously against us last year where he had a mare to my delight, but I just can’t shack my pathetic distain for him as a defender, I can’t put my finger on it.

Certainly does like to rile people up and take but in a lot of gamesmanship .

I knew Burnley had a god defensive record but 12 goals in 40 is amazing.

Parker seems to be expert in the championship but very poor in the Premier league. 3 seasons in the Premier league... 3 relegations.
