Ruud van Nistelrooy books meeting with Leicester City duo for conversation on next season

Ben Nelson and Will Alves are due back at Leicester City’s Seagrave training base on Tuesday to hold discussions with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy about next season.

The duo concluded their Championship loan spells at the weekend as the regular campaign came to an end.

Ruud van Nistelrooy sees both of them playing together for City in the Championship next season and will discuss that with them on Tuesday.

Alves has already played under van Nistelrooy, making his Premier League debut in December before being loaned out, but while Nelson has been on loan at Oxford for the full season, the manager got to know him while he was undergoing injury rehab at Seagrave in the winter.

“When Ben was here going through his recovery, I spoke a lot with him,” van Nistelrooy said. “I knew also his profile, his qualities, his games at Oxford before the injury.

“He’s done really well. They will be in on Tuesday here, both of them, and I’ll be having a conversation with them.

“The objective was to play and make minutes. They are again academy players, which in my opinion is how to move forward (as a club). Conversations will take place on Tuesday.”

Asked if he saw them as key players for the club next season, van Nistelrooy replied: “I see that, yes.”

Nelson was an unused substitute for Oxford’s final game having played a significant role in their survival, helping the club earn four wins and keep four clean sheets in a run of eight starts after returning from injury.

His form even saw Oxford manager Gary Rowett suggest he could play in the Premier League from as early as next season.

Reflecting on the campaign, the centre-back wrote on social media: “To everyone at Oxford United, thank you for everything you’ve given me during my time with you. For me this isn’t just about my self-improvement, I’ve genuinely loved the passion and support from the players, staff and most importantly the fans.

“One of the proudest moments of my career was scoring for you last week (against Sunderland) and it’s been a privilege and an honour to play a part in keeping Oxford in the Championship. Wishing the club all the very best for the future.”

In total, Nelson played 17 times. Alves, meanwhile, registered one goal and three assists in his 14 Championship appearances for Cardiff.

Hamza Choudhury won't be returning to City just yet as he has a play-off campaign to come with Sheffield United. The Blades will face Bristol City in the semi-finals.

As expected Hamza starts for Sheffield Utd vs Bristol City.

Play yourself into a sale.  There's a good lad.

Without being too cynical, I don’t think there’s much chance they’d be signing him as a right back for the prem.

They've used him a lot playing ahead of the defence, just massively short in that right back position with Clarke and Seriki injured and Wilder really doesn't seem to trust Gilchrist.

He's a known quantity. They'd probably see him as an ideal squad player.

Wanya has his first goal and assist during his loan spell at De Graafshap 🙌

Wanya is starting for them right now. They are in the playoffs so great experience for him.  (This is the last regular season game)

it would be a great time for him to pick up form

never understood why Enzo froze him out last season

Personally I think he was just simply not quite ready.  He was and still is very raw and that’s not helped by the fact that he swapped positions as he wasn’t previously used as a winger.

He has had a very stop start season and hasn’t nailed down a spot just yet, but hopefully he gets these next few games and has some success. I can’t imagine he will be in contention with us based on our options but if they get promoted they may take him for a modest fee

To be fair he's he's 22 and doing OK in the Dutch 2nd tier.

So probably judged as not at the level for the Championship.

Yeah but it came off the back of him doing well and scoring his first goal, it's not like he was playing badly

I might be remembering wrong, but wasn’t he going to be out of contact at the end of that season. Enzo seemingly froze him out the squad until he signed a deal, which he did in the December, But by that time we’d picked up Yunis and Fatawu, who didn’t sign until after the season started, and he found it much harder to make the matchday squad

Thought he was very good away at Bournemouth in the cup, but was clear he needed a season or two playing men’s football before being ready. Shame he spent so long injured on his first loan

with Wanya being third choice on either side isn’t a bad option. With hopefully Bilal and Monga fighting for the CAM role.

lol hopefully not and he’s one to leave. I’d sooner Evans take the number 9 shirt and start than him.

Highly thought of 20yr old Tom Wilson-Brown has either got caught in bed with Derek McInnes daughter or wife or told him he’s a shite manager because he don’t even make the squad now.

When he first signed he was on the bench with McInnes bigging him up after seeing him in training, another failed loan in the sense of playing time although I guess it’s put him in and around a 1st team environment 🤷‍♂️

Bilal won't stay but entertaining the fact he will...he'd be the first name on the teamsheet in the champ. Monga wouldn't get a sniff sadly!

It’d be a good season for Monga coming off the bench for him or on the wings for sure though!

what happened with Silko Thomas at Wigan, did we recall him or what he never seemed to get mentioned in here?

He got a pretty bad injury I think..
