I think an absolutely punitive points deduction that de facto relegates them is more likely than that to be honest. Like Juventus in 2006.

Yes but rumours say its going to be a direct relegation decision to avoid more complicated appeal procedures. In fact some of the charges have a direct relegation punishment.

I don't think it will work like this. I'm afraid it's going to be an extra promotion from Championship.

Not sure about that, given how the shareholder situation works. I absolutely could not see a team that finishes 17th once hypothetical points deduction are administered accepting relegation.

no chance, it'll be a points deduction that makes 20th a certainty. if there's an extra promotion it'll be from the vanarama if the EFL reject Man City getting membership as a result of the financial offences

I agree but my argument is they're not going to have points deduction. The decision will be a direct relegation punishment if they're found guilty of 3 of the 115 charges.

So when Juventus got booted out of serie A in 2006, they were placed at the bottom of the table without deductions, and only two others got relegated instead of three. So one would assume that’s the precedent.

It would cause absolute carnage to relegate three teams plus Manchester City. The team who finishes 17th, and ends up going down, would have grounds for appeal and may very well win as they would only be relegated because of the wrongdoing of another team.

It makes far more sense for the PL to simply place Manchester City rock bottom and therefore take up one of the three standard relegation places.

Would Pep have signed a new deal if they knew they were getting relegated though?

They absolutely will not relegate / promote 4 teams.

If Man City go it'll be in 20th place.

Let's be honest, it's a big if anyway and if they finally get Man City, we should probably start worrying about the punishments we've escaped.

Indeed but Serie A back then had different rules and the structure of the league wasn't the semi "closed/private" one we have here for both PL and EFL.

Still I'm not ruling out your approach I'm just saying we're not very sure which rules are applying.

A points deduction of, say, 50-60 points could be argued to be survivable based on their previous seasons' performance.

60 points last season would have put them on 31 points in 17th place, five clear of Luton Town.

Really? They're likely to get a relegation penalty. Not doubting you but, I'd just assumed that it was highly unlikely they'll actually be found guilty of anything or if they are, the punishment will be minor. Perhaps I'm just that cynical.

I mean with Southampton it'd have to be like 80 points for bottom. that said, it's been like 6 weeks of being utterly shit, no way have they learnt they're getting relegated and the verdict not leaked

The Premier League wouldn't even be stupid enough to try that one, I suspect. Literally the only reason the 17th placed team would be relegated is due to the wrongdoing of Manchester City. CAS would just laugh at them.
