Yet people are ok with going for someone with a massively worse fitness record, who as said, has been injured more than he's been available, who has not played a competitive match in 2024 thanks to a cruciate injury. He's also a year older than Bertrand was. Do people just want him so we've got a new sicknote to moan about? The big difference between Matip and Bertrand is that Matip has played pretty regularly over recent seasons for one of the best teams in the country, including in cup finals and big European games. If fit, he’s better than any of our centre backs by some distance, I think. I get the concerns about his injury record but that could be mitigated by a ‘pay if you play’ arrangement. Certainly wouldn’t want to be offering him a standard 2 year contract on 80k plus per week like we did Bertrand, of course.

Define "Pretty regularly". He didn't feature for Liverpool at all in 2024. Last season he was officially injured for 37 games for Liverpool. The season before whilst only officially being injured for 3 games, he was out of the squad for a further 9 games surrounding his calf injury. He hasn't played any finals nor any big European games in that time aside from a 5-2 loss to Real in the round of 16 in the CL. By contrast Bertrand was officially injured for a total of 4 games in his final 2 seasons at Saints before making the biggest move of his career.
Clever Fox Posted 7 September 2024 Posted 7 September 2024 We're definitely going for a Senior Citzens team at this rate.

Now Mahrez is married to Ashley Ward's daughter. Which is enough to make one feel treble old....
Wortho Posted 10 September 2024 Posted 10 September 2024 Matip is still good but you'd be lucky to get 15 games out of him. I think he made Van Dijk a better player.
