Troy Deeney in 2016, turned us down to remain at Watford despite us playing champions league.

Still hurts we never got the Vardy/Deeney all-time shithouse front two.

He was offered a huge contract, but he seemed quite happy at Watford. Its possible if he had joined us and was playing champions league football he may have got an England call up.

Again, I'm not sure we even got to the part of him turning us down. He was on a podcast recently talking about how much he wanted/tried to join us.

You seem to be mixing up us bidding for players with them turning us down.

Think about it. Nobody is ever going to reject a Champions League club to stay in a relegation battle.

Danny Mills to Leicester, in his show with the under cosh can't remember if it was 2001 or 2003 when were premier league. Mills was set to join Leicester on loan after a major fall out at Leeds. Just as Mills was set to join, Leeds postponed the deal. Done us a favour Danny Mills ain't that great.

I think it was quite a bit more than that. I remember we were after him for a bit with no luck, then we played them at home and he scored twice for them to beat us 2-1 and Sven went mad and bid like 7.5m right after (a lot back then ).

The narrative from Bristol City about Maynard was that they “wouldn’t sell to a rival”. They had relatively new ownership and were quite ambitious back then.

Our bids got higher and higher. It really was like Monopoly money under Sven. Bristol City held firm, but eventually lost him to West Ham at a fraction of the price we offered.

It turned into a very poor decision from Bristol City and Maynard never did much at West Ham. Considering the money we’d have parted with we were the ones who probably got lucky

(Interestingly enough Maynard hasn’t played above Championship level since 2014 and is only 1 month older than Vardy)

Deeney’s quite open about it. It was more that Watford desperately wanted him to stay. Knocked boxes through for him, took speed bumps out at the training ground. Seemed like he enjoyed the power that Watford afforded him.

Zoltan Gera from West Brom, was going to be a like huge statement signing for Manadric to show he meant business to get Leicester to the Premier league, i seem to recall a lot of bids were being made but West Brom weren't having it. I think when Allen was asked about in a press conference he knew nothing about it... but he made a comment like there's a lot of things going on even i dont know really know... sums Allens time.

Eidur Gudjohnsen in 2000?

Went for Akinbiyi (who cost more) instead.

Have heard this one a lot, though never been able to find a source for it. Do we think he'd have chosen us over Chelsea though? One thing I always wonder.

On a tangent and to make us feel even more "what if" here's a list of strikers who moved that summer/winter for a fee paid similar to the one we paid for Akinbiyi. any of these would've been miles better, though I understand at the time the likes of Bellamy and Lua Lua were probably in the same promising bracket as AA and Benjamin at the time.

Sutton to Celtic - £6m

Viduka to Leeds - £6m

Hartson to Cov - £5m

Bellamy to Cov - £6m

Kanoute to WHU - £3.5m

Lua Lua to Newcastle - £1.5m

Wanchope to Man City - £3.5m

Ferguson to Everton - £3m ish

Sutton to Celtic, was interesting i think there was talk that MON wanted to bring Sutton to Leicester, however the summer we would have gone for him. MON joined Celtic and naturally signed in him for Celtic instead. Possibly he would have been thought of as replacement for Heskey.
