He’s a decent human being and I am proud he’s from Leicester. Maybe so, but on a forum full of opinions from lay people with no reason to (necessarily) be taken seriously, it's a bit rich having one of them trying to tell him he should stick to his job. I might as well say that to everyone on here. 2

He has an opinion on the Gaza genocide and is allowed to voice it. Like any of us. 11

Its amazing how knowledgeable he is on a subject and then all of a sudden has no idea. A more suspicious mind might think he does know and has only apologised to protect his job and reputation. I don't need to move on as this sort of tweet simply affirms my fairly low opinion of him. 9

I regard Lineker as a Leicester and England great but I think his opinion is largely amplified because of his job at the BBC and this is a problem.
Popular Post Finnegan Posted 16 May 2025 Popular Post Posted 16 May 2025 You'd have to be pretty desperate to criticise Lineker and/or his beliefs to genuinely claim he's some sort of closet anti semite. 5 1

Is it intensified because BBC have become alot more draconian recently, and their coverage is quite biased? I don't get why people have a go at Lineker just because he decides to voice his opinion. Whether he's on BBC, MOTD shouldn't matter. He shouldn't be silenced. 1

As for him not being silenced, no one is silencing him. He made a personal decision to take the tweet down once he realised the negative backlash. He wasn't forced in any way, if he was comfortable with it or comfortable with the resulting opinion, then he would have left it up. 2

If its been highlighted to him by someone or other that the 'rat' is a negative reference, and he's taken it down, that's a good thing right? But then if he's left it up after that fact, he'd get criticised still? So in your mind he can't win . So clearly he's not comfortable with it and has done the right thing? 1

I don't think I would like to see an increase in political views expressed by lots of entertainment and sports stars that work at the BBC. 4

I think he has done the right thing by taking it down. I also think he is an intelligent and learned chap who knows what it means. If he doesn't know what it means, then I am surprised that he isn't more careful with what he re-posts on twitter.
David Hankey Posted 16 May 2025 Posted 16 May 2025 Presumably, when he eventually leaves the BBC, we'll hear a lot more from him on an array of subjects. I wonder if he's considering furthering his career as a politician?

Uncle Monty Posted 16 May 2025 Posted 16 May 2025 I didn't know that a rat is a historical reference to the persecution of Jewish people either to be fair. Probably should have looked more closely about what he's posting if it's on a particularly touchy subject as the message he's trying to get across just gets lost.
Popular Post HighPeakFox Posted 16 May 2025 Popular Post Posted 16 May 2025 For anyone wanting to experience actual, deliberate, hateful, anti semitism, follow Michael Rosen and look at the comments he receives. This might have been a mistake, quickly corrected and admitted. There are plenty who are saying the worst stuff, in the worst way, out loud, and they tend not to share Lineker's politics. 6
Popular Post purpleronnie Posted 16 May 2025 Popular Post Posted 16 May 2025 You could always not follow him on social media, then not have to worry about being so upset about someone having a different opinion than you. 5

bovril Posted 16 May 2025 Posted 16 May 2025 I have noticed quite a few of my acquaintances will endorse or repost literally anything that has an anti-Zionist message on social media without any evaluation of the source or the imagery and wording, even some stuff that is quite clearly dodgy. It could be that they are genuinely antisemitic but I think most just don't engage in any kind of critical thinking before chasing madly after the dopamine rush of likes. Like a pheasant that's nearly been hit by cars five times in a minute who decides to cross the road again because they see something shiny on the other side.
