Agree with the sentiment, but let's not forget he was complicit in our 2022/23 relegation with some of the comments he made.

If you don’t see the antisemitic connotation with the rat thing that is one thing.

 

But posting an image comparing human beings to rats is in itself fairly abhorrent, and dehumanising. Which is exactly the point Lineker makes the majority of the time is wrong. 
 

The fact he apologised so quickly, which he often doesn’t do for public outcries, indicates he knows it was wrong. 
 

A club legend, but no one needs to defend something that is indefensible (and something Lineker apologised for immediately)

Appears to be pandering to his mates, Stewart and Campbell whilst counting the cash. Not surprising that he's being viewed as a useful fool. 

 

His views on men in women's sport isn't a good look.

Think you'll find Susan and Top only take their advice on what Lineker says on MOTD so he is completely complicit in our downfall, mismanagement and everything else that's followed...

I'm not arguing with you on your point about social media. And it's entirely possible that Lineker was attempting to do exactly that. Obviously I can't identify with him because I post on here on the grounds that people I know who read this forum don't know who I am. So to me it's not 'self-aggrandising' (if that's a word!) if I say something contentious.

 

I'd be mortified if I ever slipped up and came across as prejudiced in a way that I didn't intend to be, and it's for that reason that I'll defend Lineker to a degree. I could imagine a situation in a day-to-day conversation where I'd refer to a person as a bit of a rat, and if it turned out that said person was Jewish or Japanese or whatever and had cause to perceive it as racist, I'd feel awful. Not because I think it's the sort of thing I'd personally find offensive, nor that I think it should be offensive - but purely because it wouldn't have been the intention. 

 

You may well be right, and this all might be part of Lineker's design. But it might not be.

 

And I'm just not sure how much kudos you can get for doing something silly, and admitting it was silly.

A person might say that the apology was, "just words", but if that is the case then why is not the offending item, "just words" (I realise in this case it was a picture, but I feel the analogy applies).

 

Being a rat is not a good look for anyone. It's not just 100% antisemitic, it's 100% anyone. As you say in your post, the rat slur was used against other groups too. 

 

If it was a pig, I'd understand that much more... but wait, that would also be an insult to Muslims.

 

Jews and Muslims have a lot in common, why can't we all just get along?

Maybe because of the man made invention of gods and religion

Think the first person was Joey Barton....who claimed he had skeletons on his closet. As it turned out, it appeared that Joey had skeletons in his closet, including beating up his wife. 

Aside from that it's an absolute better you've got there Raj.....he didn't say hello to someone, must be an absolute bellend.

To clarify - I don’t believe verbal abuse ‘rat’ is an issue re anti semitism. We often refer to someone as ‘a bit of a rat’ - I don’t believe that would be taken badly unless someone was absolutely looking to be offended. (Which shouldn’t be your problem - it’s theirs). 

 

The imagery of the rat is the issue as that was used in nazi propaganda cartoons and posters.  the video that lineker reposted had a rat image on it.
